Adobe Acrobat was the first software to support Adobe Systems' Portable Document Format (PDF). It is a family of software, some commercial and some free of charge. Adobe Reader (formerly called Acrobat Reader) is available as a no-charge download from Adobe's web site, and allows the viewing and printing of PDF files. Acrobat and Reader are a major components of the Adobe Engagement Platform, and are widely used as a way to present information with a fixed layout similar to a paper publication.

Several other PDF-editing programs allow some minimal editing and adding of features to documents, and come with other modules including a printer driver to create PDF files.

The Adobe Acrobat Reader 1.0 was released for the public on 15 June 1993, as the first version of the Adobe Acrobat software line. It runs as a graphical, 16-bit on top of an existing MS-DOS operating system.

The DOS version of the Acrobat Reader program closely resembles the Microsoft Windows version of the Reader program.

The Acrobat Reader program is part of the Adobe Acrobat family of software. Acrobat software lets you create, view, and print documents in the Portable Document Format (PDF) – regardless of the computer, operating system, font, or application used to create the original documents. PDF files retain all the formatting, fonts, and graphics of the original documents, and virtually any document can be converted into a PDF file.

You can use the Acrobat Reader program to view, search, and print documents that have been converted to the Portable Document Format. You can also use the Reader program to view and print notes attached to PDF files.

Adobe Reader 1 is not supported and no longer available for download from Adobe web site. However, you could find and download the Adobe Reader 1 below on the web page.
