GREAT for recording BOTH from a VCR, and from local TV channels (documentaries and specials); EASY to convert file formats!
RECOMMENDED--for use with Windows Vista and Windows XP, at least.... Yes, you DO need to pay attention as you install this software, but it DOES work! Yes, there are a few "quirks" where you just have to CLOSE the program and start over (as others have mentioned). [Some of this comes from whether you will save what you have been working on or not; and whether you have other files showing on the computer software interface screen....] I used this item for recording BOTH from a VCR, and from local TV channels (special local features of people we knew, and a PBS special). Everything worked FINE, even with a 50-foot audio/video cord from Amazon (needed for the TV signal is in the next room). This worked fine even through a digital "converter box". There ARE options for output file formats, and it was interesting to convert some "after the fact" to see the varying file sizes and varying quality that resulted, to choose exactly what would be best for each use. I did NOT have any problem with the volume of the recordings. I did NOT have any problems digitizing home movies that previously had been converted from 8mm film to VCR tapes (those films dated all the way back to the 1940s to 1960s!). [Now, I will never lose my childhood(?).] I frequently DID use the "cutting" feature on the software to cut clips right to the exact second, & exact frame, that I wanted--occasionally this took some trial and error, but I really LIKED my results! [That process was one of the times that I had to close the software and reload it.] I wanted SMALL digital files, for viewing on a computer screen, only, and I was able to get those using this device/cords, and the supplied software. I got this capture device to start recording my ps3 gameplay, so at first i could get it to record and then it would record for about 5 seconds and then stop and this happened a lot. but once i got round that problem the gameplay was smooth and worked fine except it had no sound so again i had to change some settings and try stuff out and eventually got audio. so after all the different settings i tried i now have a good set up to record gameplay... Quality poor and features not as advertised for Windows PCs
Bought for and tested with a new PC running Windows 7 64-bit.Features not entirely as advertised (at least not for Windows). Supplied software doesn't support uncompressed YUV format or direct MP4 capture. For MP4 must capture in another format and then convert, resulting in some loss of quality.There's a problem with frame synchronization which causes a couple of rows from the top of the picture to appear at the bottom. This might not be visible on an ordinary TV but it's quite distracting on a computer monitor that displays all rows. Also, the supplied software supports only a few quality settings. Bit rate, etc, can't be set manually.Driver installation was tricky on Windows 7. Had to disable Windows automatic device installation and antivirus before the drivers would install correctly.Perhaps works better on Macs but hopeless for my Windows PC. After installation I restarted the Mac Mini.Device Connection: I connected the iGrabber USB cable to the back of the Mac Mini. The iGrabber comes with a video/audio RCA cable. Only two of the three RCA cables were used. One (yellow) for video and one (white) for audio were connected to the same colors on the iGrabber device. The red cable was ignored as my VCR player has mono audio output only.Software: Next I opened software and entered the second (Mac OS X iGrabber) codes on the back of the CD sleeve. I only made minor adjustments to the video and sound settings and ignored the rest. For video settings I just chose the H.264 for Compression type. For sound settings I chose USB Device in the Source tab and Mono in the Sample tab (Chose Mono only if your VHS player has one audio output) I also chose Speaker On in the Source tab.Recording: I hit play on the VCR and the video appeared in the iGrabber screen. When I was ready to record I pushed the button on the iGrabber device. A small alert window appears saying "A movie is being recorded." To stop recording you click on the small alert window.Files: After each video a Recording_0000.mov file will appear on your desktop. You can change the name accordingly.DVD Transfer: After several videos were recorded (some of which were 30 minutes in length) they were imported into iMovie for editing. DVD was created using iDVD.Comments: The iGrabber video quality was the same as the VHS original which was very good. Your quality might be different considering many factors: the VCR video speed it was recorded on (LP, SP, SLP), the playback quality of your VCR (2-4 head playback) and the quality of your VHS tape (S-VHS, condition, etc). The iGrabber software does allow you to make adjustments such as brightness. Bad installation instruction and quirks, but good video result.
Quality of the video: as good as the original VHS and broadcast (640x 480).What I have: 2010 MacBook ProWhat I like about it: I am able to back-up my old VHS tap, even the copy protected tapes I bought.Obstacles:The installation instruction is one of the worst. I may have spent over an hour to finally get it to work. I am so glad for Amazon review, however. David's review in January 2010 was the one I followed especiallly for running the driver in the package. I only have a few more comments of my own:@ SERIAL NUMBER - In the program installation, you'll be asked for S/N. This one made me really frustrated because there is a serial number on the underside of the product, an SKU number on the box and another s/n on the DVD envelope. Use the number on the DVD envelope and include the hyphen (###-####-####).@ In the initial program setting, there was NO SOUND from the video. Go to Record/ Sound Setting, then on the tab, select Source and I think you look for "other device".@ 2nd VIDEO Recording only last more or less 5 SECONDS. This took about another half an hour to figure out how to fix it. So far I think what helps is either quit the program and run it again, or change the video size back and forth....so the program's initial interface is terrible, but at the end, it did work and the result for me is a very good quality DVD duplication of the original VHS, or at least as good as the VHS....
