You will need to access the developer console and execute some commands to achieve split-screen mode on your PC.
You can also pair 2 or more PC's on the same network and have more than 2 players.
This works for all game modes including mutations and even add-on maps.
I know lots of people struggle to do this and play flawlessly so if this guide helped you please let me know in the comments, and if you had any problems or didn't know what to do let me know in the comments too :)
This method should work just fine if you have 2 Xbox 360 controllers (or any other x-input compatible controllers) hooked up to your computer, and it will allow you to play all of the game modes excluding mutations.
What you have to do is simply subscribe to this add-on .
Once you are subscribed and the add-on finished downloading, just launch the game (if it's not already) and the first thing you will notice is the addition of a new mode in the menu called split-screen.
Once you're in-game you just start playing using the 2 controllers you have.
However, if you only have 1 controller, wanna play an add-on map. wanna play a mutation or even want to play LAN/online head over the next 2 sections.
If you only have one controller to play with and you want the other player to use the keyboard/mouse you will need enable developer console.
To do so go to option> keyboard > then check "enable developer console", once you do so you can press the tilde key [wiki.unvanquished.net] to activate the console.
But, first things first, open a notepad from the start menu then copy and paste this code into it
Save the notepad file with any name you want (i chose split-screen.txt) into:
Steam > steamapps > common > Left 4 Dead 2 > left4dead2 > cfg
Once you do that head over to your game and open developer console and type in:
NOTE: In my case, the name was split-screen.txt, depending on the name you chose you would exec the name of your txt file.
Then simply launch a split-screen session using the add-on from the previous section, you will be able to play with 1 controller and one keyboard/mouse combo.
Unfortunately the previous add-on doesn't support launching add-on maps that aren't in the official list, to do so you will need the help of our friend Mr. developer console.
First you will need to know the name of the map you want to play, to do this simply launch a single-player game from the main menu with the add-on map you want to play, while in-game pause and then launch the developer console, in the top right corner there should be some text (You can move the console window away if it's blocking the text), the second line should say the exact name of the map right after "Map" and between the quotation marks, in this case it was the first chapter of Dead Center.
Just write the name down and you can quit the single-player session.
On the main menu launch the developer console and type in the following command
Replacing "mapname" with the name of the add-on map you wrote down before, it would be something like this in our previous case:
Once you're in the game you will need to launch the split-screen session, to do so open the console again and simply type in:
Your game should re-load and you will be playing split-screen on your add-on map
If you're using 1 controller and keyboard/mouse you can also run the split-screen.txt script after executing the map.
NOTE: You can use this method for official maps if the split-screen add-on didn't work for you or you can't download it for some reason.
When you launch a map using the command
It'll usually start the game in campaign mode, however if you want to play a game mode other than that you will need to type in the game mode name after the map name just like the following:
An example of this if you want to play Versus on Dead Center's first chapter
Mutations work the same way but their names can be a bit tricky to find, you can click here [forums.alliedmods.net] to check out some names for a couple of mutations.
Once again, if you're using 1 controller and keyboard/mouse you can also run the split-screen.txt script after executing the map with your desired game mode.
You should now be playing in the game mode you want on any map you want, If you are playing with one controller and one keyboard/mouse use the trick in the beginning of this section.
If you want to play the game with 3, 4, or even more players you will need more than one PC, all of them connected to the same network, and L4D2 is installed on all machines. But, still how do you do it?
Let's take an example first, we are 4 players with 2 PC and we want to play together whether it's co-op campaign or versus.
Make sure all PC's are connected to the same network (wired connections result in less latency), one of the computer will host the game with 2 players and the other will join in with 2 players so you will have a total of 4 players.
To host a game, pick one of the computer to be the host, you will get better results if this computer is the one with better hardware and better connection to your router, it wouldn't make much difference but can sometimes result in a better experience.
On this computer navigate to
Steam > steamapps > common > Left 4 Dead 2
Right click on left4dead2.exe and click "create shortcut", this should place a shortcut in the same folder, right click on that shortcut and click properties, in the target section it should say the path to the exe file we just mentioned, just move to the end and add a space then "-insecure" like in the following example.
(WITH the quotation marks)
Click OK.
Launch the game from the shortcut, open the developer console and input these 2 commands
Then just follow the previous section to start a split-screen game with the map and game mode you want. pause the game and launch developer console, type in the following command
You should get some text in the console interface, look for "udp/ip" line, in front of it you will find the IP address of the server it will look like
Write down this bit, now we shall head over to the other computer that should join our game.
Do the same shortcut trick mentioned above on this computer as well, start the game and launch developer console and input the following command
Replace "ipaddress" with the IP address we got from the status command on the host computer and it will look something like this.
This should connect you to the host computer with 2 players and you will have a total of 4 players on the same server.
If any of the computers has players using keyboard/mouse plus controller combo refer to the previous section to make it playable with 1 controller and one keyboard/mouse by executing the split-screen.txt script.
If you want to play as 3 players you will want the client computer to join in as a single-screen player, to do so input the following command:
In the previous case it would be:
(Without the splitscreen part)
If you wanna do this Online, it will be the exact same steps except that the host computer must have his router port forwarded for steam ports, if you don't know how to port forward your router, just search on Google " How to port forward "router name" ", Since this process differs for each router will have to do it on your own.
If this guide helped you please let me know in the comment section, rate and also favorite.
And if you had any problems report them on the comments please.
Thank you for your time and have fun!
To choose the survivors you want, do either of the following commands:
Incase you get weird interaction between your controller and keyboard, as in pressing controller buttons or keyboard keys switches up which controls which, open steam overlay (shift+tab) while in-game with the controller connected, go to controller options and uncheck "use configurations for non-steam controllers".

Despite the game being a decade old, Left for Dead 2remains one of the best multiplayer games to date. Having a team of four people work together to take on hordes of zombies through fun and interesting levels proved to be a recipe for success. However, there hasn't been a new game in the franchise for some time.

Thankfully, the developers of Left for Dead are making a new game that looks to revive the genre. That said, there are still other games that try to scratch that itch left behind by Left for Dead that you can buy now. Here are 10 games to play if you like Left for Dead 2.
Updated by Madison Lennon on April 4, 2020: Left 4 Dead 2 is considered one of the best survival horror games of all time, especially because of its co-operative multiplayer which makes it fun to play with friends. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of games on the market that will give you the same experience as Left 4 Dead 2.
It won numerous awards and was praised for its incredible attention to detail and personality. But we did find a few more games that should fill the void for gamers looking for something similar and updated the following list to include our choices.
15 Remnant: From The Ashes
Remnant: From the Ashes is a third-person shooter game where players have to try and save the world after an ancient evil entering the dimension and releases a horde of demonic creatures and monsters. One of the coolest things about this game is that you can play multiplayer and in co-op mode.
The game will scale the level of difficulty when you're playing and new people enter the game so that it becomes tougher when other people are playing alongside you. You also gain access to a variety of different weapons.
14 Dying Light
Dying Light is another fun zombie video game with co-operative multiplayer modes. It is more intense than some of the other zombie or post-apocalyptic games on the market as it has a day/night system not often seen in the genre.
The day/night system drastically changes the situations in the game since zombies become far more aggressive and difficult to get rid of when it is night. The longer you play the game and the further you get into the story, the more access you'll have to different weapons and mechanics.
13 The Last Of Us
The Last Of Us is a classic zombie game. While it isn't designed to be multiplayer or co-op, it is certainly worth playing if you're a fan of the Left 4 Dead franchise. It's considered one of the best PlayStation 4 games of all time and one of the best video games of all time.
You will play as Joel, a character entrusted with transporting Ellie to the people who can make a vaccine after it is discovered that Ellie has immunity to the virus. It's terrifying and full of adventure, plus the writing, characters, and story are exceptional.
12 Dead Island
Like Left 4 Dead, Dead Island is also a survival horror game that features zombies. As the name suggests, the game is primarily set on an island, specifically the island of Banoi. The main storyline begins after a hotel party where things go terribly awry in the night.
A group of survivors escapes the area after an infectious plague of zombies begins to attack. It is an open-world game, for the most part, which allows players to explore a wide area. Dead Island received a lot of praise for its emotional story arc and graphics.
11 Portal 2
Portal 2 is a little different in that it is a puzzle platforming game but it involves strategy which is something that Left 4 Dead 2 also requires. Players control Chell through the Aperture Science Enrichment Center while it is being reconstructed by a supercomputer. They will need to solve puzzles to progress through the story.
There is also a new cooperative mode introduced into Portal 2 if multiplayer capabilities are important to you. Portal 2 is considered one of the best video games of all time thanks to its stellar writing and balanced gameplay mechanics.
10 Killing Floor 2
Killing Floor 2 is unadulterated, zombie-slaying action. Players can join up to five other players as they mow down the undead through a few levels. There have been a few complaints that there aren't enough levels, but with gameplay so addicting and fun, that's just small pickings at this point.
Killing Floor 2 also includes a PvP mode similar to Left for Dead where 12 people will alternate between being the survivors and being the zombies (or Zed as the game calls them). With the right people at your side, this could be just the thing for those who miss the heyday of Left for Dead 2.
9 World War Z
When a video game adaptation of World War Zwas announced, some people were left a bit skeptical. Now that the game is out (the most recent entry on our list), it's actually quite good. Players will work together to take on the undead, but it's the behaviors of the enemies that will leave you astounded.
Massive hordes can appear on screen at once, more than most zombie games. The undead will form pyramids of their own bodies to climb to higher areas and get the drop on you. The best part is that this new release just costs $40 and captures the frantic feeling of living through a zombie apocalypse.
8 Warhammer: Vermintide 2
The setting of Warhammer: Vermintide 2 may not evoke memories of playing Left for Dead 2, but the gameplay certainly does. A small team of players are tasked with making their way through end-of-the-world fantasy levels. They'll be ambushed by a host of mythical creatures and demonic forces.
The five players can expand their skills and level up to achieve certain skills and fill out each other's weaknesses. The more you play, the better you'll be at tackling the onslaught of horror. There are so many obstacles to overcome and enemies to fight that the game is guaranteed to keep you busy for a while.
7 Deep Rock Galactic
Deep Rock Galactic might be a space-based game, but its influences from the Left for Dead series are quite apparent. A team of up to four players will make their way through intergalactic caverns and locations. They'll be challenged by all sorts of horrifying alien creatures, which they must work together to take down.
The gimmick with Deep Rock Galactic is that the environments are procedurally generated, meaning that players will not have the same experience twice. Enhancing that aspect is the fact that the levels are fully destructible, reacting to the explosive force of player weapons and alien attacks.
6 Alien Swarm
Alien Swarm is another co-op game developed by Valve. While it's just as old as Left for Dead 2, it has a lot of design elements from those games that could interest people to play. Teams will choose characters with different classes and make their way through haunting levels, taking down swarms of aliens along the way.

Those different classes ensure that players will each need to adopt a different strategy to win each level. What makes this game more fun is that it's free-to-play, meaning that players can go on Steam and download it right now. It'll also have no trouble running on most computers.
5 Helldivers
If you're looking for the Left for Dead experience, but with a different gameplay style, then Helldivers may be just what you're looking for. This is a cooperative twin-stick shooter. Players will be making their way through levels, watching each other's backs and mowing down aliens.
However, Helldivers has some mechanics that make things interesting. Friendly fire exists, meaning players will have to think twice before they start unloading into a monster. There are also enough worlds (and a nice campaign) to extend playtime for dozens of hours easily. Players will get their money's worth by purchasing this game.
4 Payday 2
Payday 2is a game where players must work together to pull off some of the most daring heights in history. Each player will pick one of the crime members, each with their own skills and abilities. Players can then take all sorts of missions and accomplish them in however way they want.
Payday 2 is thematically very different from Left for Dead, but the roots are clearly there. Cooperation is the name of the game, and multiplayer is the core feature of the experience. What might sell it for some people is that the game has VR support, giving a greater sense of realism to all those heists.
3 Call Of Duty: World At War
Call of Duty Zombies began in Call of Duty: World at War. In many ways, this classic, arcade-like mode is still the best in the series. Four players will work together, defending themselves from waves of incoming zombies. They'll collect perks, special weapons, and more as they try to desperately survive against the undead.
In the PC version of the game, players can mod it to add all sorts of new maps, including expansions of pre-existing ones or entirely new maps altogether. These possibilities alone are what make this a great experience for players. There is no end to what maps players can use.
2 Earthfall
While many games like Left for Dead shake up the formula in some way, Earthfall does its best to give players the same experience they loved back in the day. Earthfall is essentially Left for Dead, but players will be taking on hordes of powerful aliens instead of zombies.
RELATED: Left for Dead Writer and League of Legends Designer Form New Studio
A team of up to four has to tackle horrifying creatures as they try to save humanity from an alien invasion. With better technology, Earthfall can have some haunting moments as legions of aliens come dashing toward players. It captures the run-or-die feeling of classic Left for Dead, which is what players will want.
1 Strange Brigade
Strange Brigade is every bit as bizarre as its name implies, but that's precisely why it's so much fun. The game has a team of four making through way through Egypt in the 1930s. The trick is that various creatures and monsters from Egyptian myth have risen up, and the players are tasked with destroying them.
Not only will players have to tackle monsters, but they'll also have to work together to solve puzzles with varying degrees of difficulty. There's a lot of variety, and the unique allows it to make a name for itself while building on the formula established by Left for Dead.
