Bitmoji Classroom: A resource hub to assist virtual, hybrid learning

First, it was emoticons, then it became emojis. In the last few years, Bitmojis have taken over the communication sphere on social media platforms.

But these personalized emojis are no longer limited to Snapchat and Facebook. Teachers are now using Bitmojis to illustrate virtual classrooms during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What started as a fun way to create a miniature cartoon version of oneself has transformed into a new world of virtual classroom resources.

The Bitmoji Classroom is an educational tool that uses a teacher's personal Bitmoji and allows them to create a cartoon-like classroom.

Teachers are able to use their creativity to design a virtual classroom that either reflects their physical room or one that feels like a classroom from Harry Potter.

As most schools are using virtual and hybrid education due to the pandemic, some teachers aren't able to decorate their regular classrooms. But the Bitmoji Classroom gives the students the normalcy of a classroom and allows teachers to make the room unique.

"It's giving teachers their room back," said Jenn Sharek, a kindergarten teacher at Blackhawk School District. "Our students can wake up and think, 'Gee, I wonder what my teacher will have in the classroom for me to see.' To make those little learners so excited, that is really what we have to have happen right now."

Sharek brought the Bitmoji Classroom idea to Blackhawk. She shared a presentation about the classroom's potential at a school board meeting and got approval to use it. Several other teachers — especially elementary teachers — at Blackhawk have jumped on board and are using the platform, too.

Heather Stein, fourth-grade math, science and social studies teacher at Blackhawk, said she first saw the Bitmoji Classroom on social media and saw its potential right away.

"At the beginning of the summer, when I started seeing (Bitmoji Classrooms) pop up on Facebook ... I thought maybe we can use them to reach students on a deeper, more meaningful level," Stein said.

The Bitmoji Classroom isn't a virtual curriculum platform. It's a resource center that acts as a home base for students.

For instance, students are able to click on different components of the classroom, such as books sitting in a bookshelf, the whiteboard or a picture. Several items inside of the classroom are connected to links to resources, such as additional math practice problems, educational games and instructional videos for further learning.

"The Bitmoji page is a virtual manipulative room," Stein said. "If a student needs to revisit the lesson, they can."

The classroom is designed to be a resource to supplement the lesson.

"Nothing can replicate the in-person interaction," Stein said. "This is not a substitute for curriculum. I like to think of my Bitmoji Classroom as a nice complement to the curriculum. We now have very COVID-conscious classrooms. You can't share items ... there's social distancing. But Bitmoji helps support students differently than we have in the past."

The Bitmoji Classroom adds a level of fun that can be lost in just learning from home and finding basic resources online, especially for younger learners.

"It's a different way to organize those resources," Stein said. "I can say, 'Go onto this page and look for the cat, and click on the cat.' Instead of, 'Go to the math folder.' It's more user-friendly for a younger audience."

    A cool-down resource

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many adults and children experienced trauma. Some people lost their jobs, others became sick, and many were at-home nearly all day for months.

Trauma can add an extra level of difficulty for young learners. In a traditional classroom, many teachers have a cool-down corner, where children are able to take a break from a math problem and relax their mind if needed.

"With the return to school, some students may have experienced trauma," Stein said. "I want them to have an opportunity to have ownership of how they're feeling."

But virtual and hybrid learning makes grappling with emotions a bit more difficult.

"In my in-person classroom, I have a cool-down or calm-down corner. It gives students a safe place to manage their emotions," Stein said. "It's good for students who have experienced trauma, are on the Autism spectrum, or feel overwhelmed — maybe their pet died and they don’t feel like learning."

In her Bitmoji Classroom, Stein recreated the cool-down corner, naming it "Australia."

In the children's book "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day," every time something bad happens to Alexander, he says he wants to go to Australia.

"If our students need a break, they go to Australia," Stein said.

In "Australia" there are yoga cards with breathing exercises, relaxing videos and other ways to help students work through their feelings.

"The classroom that I have I call Australia. It has my Bitmoji on it and everything is clickable, including the lights, which take them to resources that show Autism-friendly light videos. A fish tank takes them to relaxing fish videos. Clicking the window shows calming videos," Stein said. "They can use that time to decompress, focus and calm them down."

The Bitmoji Classroom is a unique complement to virtual and hybrid learning, and teachers say it's getting young learners excited during an uncertain time.

"This is going to be unlike any other year in education," Sharek said. "Luckily technology is here for us at this point and we can use it to our advantage."
