Windows Update

Software update distribution service for Microsoft Windows

Windows Update is a Microsoft service for the Windows 9x and Windows NT families of operating system, which automates downloading and installing Microsoft Windowssoftware updates over the Internet. The service delivers software updates for Windows, as well as the various Microsoft antivirus products, including Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials. Since its inception, Microsoft has introduced two extensions of the service: Microsoft Update and Windows Update for Business. The former expands the core service to include other Microsoft products, such as Microsoft Office and Microsoft Expression Studio. The latter is available to business editions of Windows 10 and permits postponing updates or receiving updates only after they have undergone rigorous testing.

As the service has evolved over the years, so have its client software. For a decade, the primary client component of the service was the Windows Update web app that could only be run inside Internet Explorer. Starting with Windows Vista, the primary client component became Windows Update Agent, an integral component of the operating system.

The service provides several kinds of updates. Security updates or critical updates mitigate vulnerabilities against security exploits against Microsoft Windows. Cumulative updates are updates that bundle multiple updates, both new and previously released updates. Cumulative updates were introduced with Windows 10 and have been backported to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

Microsoft routinely releases updates on the second Tuesday of each month (known as the Patch Tuesday), but can provide them whenever a new update is urgently required to prevent a newly discovered or prevalent exploit. System administrators can configure Windows Update to install critical updates for Microsoft Windows automatically, so long as the computer has an Internet connection.

Clients[edit]

Windows Update web app[edit]

The Windows Update web app, version 4, in Windows ME

Windows Update was introduced as a web app with the launch of Windows 98 and offered additional desktop themes, games, device driver updates, and optional components such as NetMeeting.[1] Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 were retroactively given the ability to access the Windows Update website and download updates designed for those operating systems, starting with the release of Internet Explorer 4. The initial focus of Windows Update was free add-ons and new technologies for Windows. Security fixes for Outlook Express, Internet Explorer and other programs appeared later, as did access to beta versions of upcoming Microsoft software, e.g. Internet Explorer 5. Fixes to Windows 98 to resolve the Year 2000 problem were distributed using Windows Update in December 1998. Microsoft attributed the sales success of Windows 98 in part to Windows Update.[2]

The Windows Update web app requires either Internet Explorer or a third-party web browser that supports the ActiveX technology. The first version of the web app, version 3, does not send any personally-identifiable information to Microsoft. Instead, the app downloads a full list of every available update and chooses which one to download and install. But the list grew so large that the performance impact of processing became a concern. Arie Slob, writing for the Windows-help.net newsletter in March 2003, noted that the size of the update list had exceeded 400 KB, which caused delays of more than a minute for dial-up users.[3] Windows Update v4, released in 2001 in conjunction with Windows XP, changed this. This version of the app makes an inventory of the system's hardware and Microsoft software and sends them to the service, thus offloading the processing burden to Microsoft servers.[3]

Critical Update Notification Utility[edit]

Critical Update Notification Utility (initially Critical Update Notification Tool) is a background process that checks the Windows Update web site on a regular schedule for new updates that have been marked as "Critical". It was released shortly after Windows 98.

By default, this check occurs every five minutes, plus when Internet Explorer starts; however, the user could configure the next check to occur only at certain times of the day or on certain days of the week. The tool queries the Microsoft server for a file called "", which contained a list of all the critical updates released for the operating system. The tool then compares this list with the list of installed updates on its machine and displays an update availability notification. Once the check is executed, any custom schedule defined by the user is reverted to the default. Microsoft stated that this ensures that users received notification of critical updates in a timely manner.[4]

An analysis done by security researcher H. D. Moore in early 1999 was critical of this approach, describing it as "horribly inefficient" and susceptible to attacks. In a posting to BugTraq, he explained that, "every single Windows 98 computer that wishes to get an update has to rely on a single host for the security. If that one server got compromised one day, or an attacker cracks the [Microsoft] DNS server again, there could be millions of users installing trojans every hour. The scope of this attack is big enough to attract crackers who actually know what they are doing..."[5]

Microsoft continued to promote the tool through 1999 and the first half of 2000. Initial releases of Windows 2000 shipped with the tool. The tool did not support Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.

Automatic Updates[edit]

Automatic Updates is the successor of the Critical Update Notification Utility. It was released in 2000, along with Windows Me. It supports Windows 2000 SP3 as well.

Unlike its predecessor, Automatic Updates can download and install updates. Instead of the five-minute schedule used by its predecessor, Automatic Updates checks the Windows Update servers once a day. After Windows Me is installed, a notification balloon prompts the user to configure the Automatic Updates client. The user can choose from three notification schemes: Being notified before downloading the update, being notified before installing the update, or both. If new updates are ready to be installed, you can install the updates before turning off your computer. When updates are waiting to be installed, you'll see a shield icon on the Shutdown button.

Windows XP and Windows 2000 SP3 include Background Intelligent Transfer Service, a Windows service for transferring files in the background without user interaction. As a system component, it is capable of monitoring the user's Internet usage, and throttling its own bandwidth usage in order to prioritize user-initiated activities. The Automatic Updates client for these operating systems was updated to use this system service.

Automatic Updates in Windows XP gained notoriety for repeatedly interrupting the user while working on their computer. Every time an update requiring a reboot was installed, Automatic Updates would prompt the user with a dialog box that allowed the user to restart immediately or dismiss the dialog box, which would reappear in ten minutes; a behavior that Jeff Atwood described as "perhaps the naggiest dialog box ever."[6]

In 2013, it was observed that shortly after the startup process, Automatic Updates () and Service Host ( in Windows XP would claim 100% of a computer's CPU capacity for extended periods of time (between ten minutes to two hours), making affected computers unusable. According to Woody Leonhart of InfoWorld, early reports of this issue could be seen in Microsoft TechNetforums in late May 2013, although Microsoft first received large number of complaints about this issue in September 2013. The cause was an exponential algorithm in the evaluation of superseded updates which had grown large over the decade following the release of Windows XP. Microsoft's attempts to fix the issue in October, November and December proved futile, causing the issue to be escalated to the top priority.[7][8]

Windows Update Agent[edit]

Starting with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, Windows Update Agent replaces both the Windows Update web app and the Automatic Updates client.[9][10] It is in charge of downloading and installing software update from Windows Update, as well as the on-premises servers of Windows Server Updates Services or System Center Configuration Manager.[11][12]

Windows Update Agent can be managed through a Control Panel applet, as well as Group Policy, Microsoft Intune and Windows PowerShell. It can also be set to automatically download and install both important and recommended updates. In prior versions of Windows, such updates were only available through the Windows Update web site. Additionally, Windows Update in Windows Vista supports downloading Windows Ultimate Extras, optional software for Windows Vista Ultimate Edition.

Unlike Automatic Updates in Windows XP, Windows Update Agent in Windows Vista and Windows 7 allows the user to postpone the mandatory restart (required for the update process to complete) for up to four hours. The revised dialog box that prompts for the restart appears under other windows, instead of on top of them. However, standard user accounts only have 15 minutes to respond to this dialog box. This was changed with Windows 8: Users have 3 days (72 hours) before the computer reboots automatically after installing automatic updates that require a reboot. Windows 8 also consolidates the restart requests for non-critical updates into just one per month. Additionally, the login screen notifies them of the restart requirements.[13]

Windows Update Agent makes use of the Transactional NTFS feature introduced with Windows Vista to apply updates to Windows system files. This feature helps Windows recover cleanly in the event of an unexpected failure, as file changes are committed atomically.[14]

Windows 10 contains major changes to Windows Update Agent operations; it no longer allows the manual, selective installation of updates. All updates, regardless of type (this includes hardware drivers), are downloaded and installed automatically, and users are only given the option to choose whether their system would reboot automatically to install updates when the system is inactive, or be notified to schedule a reboot.[15][16] Microsoft offers a diagnostic tool that can be used to hide troublesome device drivers and prevent them from being reinstalled, but only after they had been already installed, then uninstalled without rebooting the system.[17][18]

Windows Update Agent on Windows 10 supports peer to peer distribution of updates; by default, systems' bandwidth is used to distribute previously downloaded updates to other users, in combination with Microsoft servers. Users may optionally change Windows Update to only perform peer to peer updates within their local area network.[19]

Windows 10 also introduced cumulative updates. For example, if Microsoft released updates KB00001 in July, KB00002 in August, and KB00003 in September, Microsoft would release cumulative update KB00004 which packs KB00001, KB00002, and KB00003 together. Installing KB00004 will also install KB00001, KB00002 and KB00003, mitigating the need for multiple restarts and reducing the number of downloads needed. KB00004 may also include other fixes with their own KB-number that were not separately released.[20] A disadvantage of cumulative updates is that downloading and installing updates that fix individual problems is no longer possible.

Windows Update for Business[edit]

Windows Update for Business is a term for a set of features in the Pro, Enterprise and Education editions of Windows 10, including:[21][22][23]

  • The ability to change the Windows 10 release branch from the default "Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted)" (formerly "Current Branch" or "CB") to "Semi-Annual Channel" (formerly "Current Branch for Business" or "CBB"), or vice versa. The former offers feature updates as soon as they are released. The latter offers feature updates with a four-month delay, so that they may receive further testing.
  • The ability to delay quality updates for up to 30 days.
  • The ability to delay feature updates for up to 365 days.

These features were added in Windows 10 version 1511.[24] They are intended for large organizations with many computers, so they can logically group their computers for gradual deployment. Microsoft recommends a small set of pilot computers to receive the updates almost immediately, while the set of most critical computers to receive them after every other group has done so, and has experienced their effects.[25]

Other Microsoft update management solutions, such as Windows Server Update Services or System Center Configuration Manager, do not override Windows Update for Business. Rather, they force Windows 10 into the "dual scan mode". This can cause confusion for administrators who do not comprehend the full ramifications of the dual scan mode.[26]

Decommissioning[edit]

On August 3 2020 the update service was decommissioned for Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003 and Vista due to Microsoft discontinuing SHA-1 updates. [27]

Complementary software and services[edit]

As organizations continued to use more computers, the per-machine Windows Update clients started to become unwieldy and insufficient. In response to the need of organizations for deploying updates to many machines, Microsoft introduced what was ultimately called Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). WSUS downloads updates for Microsoft product to a server computer on which it is running and redistributes them to the computers within the organization over a local area network (LAN). One of the benefits of this method is a reduction in the consumption of Internet bandwidth, equal to (N-1)×S, where N is the number of computers in the organization and S is the size made by the updates. Additionally, WSUS permits administrators to test updates on a small group of test computers before deploying them to all systems, in order to ensure that business continuity is not disrupted because of the changes of the updates. For very large organizations, multiple WSUS servers can be chained together hierarchically. Only one server in this hierarchy downloads from the Internet. WSUS is a component of the Windows Server family of operating systems.

Update packages distributed via the Windows Update service can be individually downloaded from Microsoft Update Catalog. These updates can be delivered to computers without any network connections (e.g. using a USB flash drive) or used deploy Microsoft products in pre-updated state. In case of the former, Windows Update Agent () can install these files. In case of the latter, Microsoft deployment utilities such as DISM, WADK and MDT can consume these packages.

Microsoft offers System Center Configuration Manager for very complex deployment and servicing scenarios. The product integrates with all of the aforesaid tools (WSUS, DISM, WADK, MDT) to automate the process.

Service[edit]

At the beginning of 2005, Windows Update was being accessed by about 150 million people,[28] with about 112 million of those using Automatic Updates.[29]

As of 2008, Windows Update had about 500 million clients, processed about 350 million unique scans per day, and maintained an average of 1.5 million simultaneous connections to client machines. On Patch Tuesday, the day Microsoft typically releases new software updates, outbound traffic could exceed 500 gigabits per second.[30] Approximately 90% of all clients used automatic updates to initiate software updates, with the remaining 10% using the Windows Update web site. The web site is built using ASP.NET, and processes an average of 90,000 page requests per second.

Traditionally, the service provided each patch in its own proprietary archive file. Occasionally, Microsoft released service packs which bundled all updates released over the course of years for a certain product. Starting with Windows 10, however, all patches are delivered in cumulative packages.[31] On 15 August 2016, Microsoft announced that effective October 2016, all future patches to Windows 7 and 8.1 would become cumulative as with Windows 10. The ability to download and install individual updates would be removed as existing updates are transitioned to this model.[32] This has resulted in increasing download sizes of each monthly update. An analysis done by Computerworld determined that the download size for Windows 7 x64 has increased from 119.4MB in October 2016 to 203MB in October 2017.[33] Initially, Microsoft was very vague about specific changes within each cumulative update package.[31] However, since early 2016, Microsoft has begun releasing more detailed information on the specific changes.[34]

Microsoft Update[edit]

At the February 2005 RSA Conference, Microsoft announced the first beta of Microsoft Update, an optional replacement for Windows Update that provides security patches, service packs and other updates for both Windows and other Microsoft software.[35] The initial release in June 2005 provided support for Microsoft Office 2003, Exchange 2003, and SQL Server 2000, running on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003. Over time, the list has expanded to include other Microsoft products, such as Windows Live, Windows Defender, Visual Studio, runtimes and redistributables, Zune Software, Virtual PC and Virtual Server, CAPICOM, Microsoft Lync, Microsoft Expression Studio, and other server products. It also offers Silverlight and Windows Media Player as optional downloads if applicable to the operating system.

Office Update[edit]

Office Update is a free online service that allows users to detect and install updates for certain Microsoft Office products.

The original update service supported Office 2000, Office XP, Office 2003 and Office 2007. On 1 August 2009 Microsoft decommissioned the Office Update service, merging it with Microsoft Update.[36] Microsoft Update does not support Office 2000.

With the introduction of the Office 365 licensing program, however, Microsoft once again activated a separate Office update service to service Office 365 customers. Owners of perpetual Microsoft Office licenses continue to receive updates through Microsoft Update.[37][38]

Alternative tools[edit]

A number of tools have been created by independent software vendors which provide the ability for Windows Updates to be automatically downloaded for, or added to, an online or offline system. One common use for offline updates is to ensure a system is fully patched against security vulnerabilities before being connected to the Internet or another network. A second use is that downloads can be very large, but may be dependent on a slow or unreliable network connection, or the same updates may be needed for more than one machine. AutoPatcher, WSUS Offline Update, PortableUpdate, and Windows Updates Downloader are examples such tools.[39]

View Full Version : The Game does not start under windows 8.1 "Update 1"

As per subject, why is the game not starting under windows 8.1?! i can see it under task manager using 1% resources but nothing is happening, my specs are AMD FX 8350, HD 7970, 8gb ddr3 1866ram... i think my setup is more then capable of directx11, what is wrong?!?!

Do you have the newest graphics card drivers installed?

Do you have the newest graphics card drivers installed?

Yes i have just re-installed all drivers... just in case, no change, as it happens i have another PC running similar setup but on Windows 7, the game runs perfectly fine there... also uninstalled all previous MS C++ packages and reinstalled, no change, disabled antivirus, no change... please help...

the game just hangs, no black screen, nothing, just stays like you can see below:

http://s10.postimg.org/y3sh7pnax/New_Bitmap_Image.jpg

That's strange. We have three Win 8.1 test computers here (laptops and desktop) for testing. The game is working fine on those computers. Do you have the new Windows 8.1 Update installed?

is this all the support i can get?!?!?! you guys sound like my company's IT support (have you tried rebooting your PC sir?).... funny thing cos tried it on another Windows 8.1 Enterprise x64 machine and it does not work either, same symptoms, have you actually tried this game on Windows 8.1?! or is it just my bad luck to have both systems corrupted... i do not really want to install windows 7 on my main PC just to be able to play one game! i would appreciate if someone replied to this post within 24 hours... i have already made a **** up buying season pass thinking it was a full game (had to pay another £16 for the game), and now the game does not start?!?!?! all my other games are working fine, I hardly believe the problem is with my PC's.

Yes, we have tried the game on several Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 computers, both laptops and desktops. None of them has had the problem you have reported. We are investigating the cause. Any hardware and software details that you can give us, will help us in the investigation.

lol...when i was writing this someone actually replied... anyhow, yes i have all the latest updates, I have Widows 8.1 Enterprise 64bit on both PC's, first PC amd fx 8350, hd 7970, 8gb ddr3, the other PC Phenom II 1045t, GTX 580, 4gb ddr2, both running the same version of Windows (8.1 Ent) both updated with all the updates, the game just does not start, i have moved my HDD with Windows 7 on to my main PC, it took a while to get all the drivers but the game starts and i am able to play without any problems...

I am not familiar with the Enterprise version of Windows 8. This problem might be related to the Enterprise version, as it's not reproducible on consumer Windows 8 versions (we have both 32 bit and 64 bit installs).

OK, i'll give it a go... will get different windows 8.1 installed on my pc... will report back success or failure... never had so much trouble to get the game running... at the other hand can you please tell me where does it say that THE GAME WILL NOT START ON WINDOWS 8.1 ENTERPRISE?!?!

I am experiencing the exact same issue with a Windows 8.1 x64 with Update 1 installed.

My specs are:

Windows 8.1 Pro with Update 1 x64 (installed from the Windows 8.1 installation media)
MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard
8GB DDR3 GeIL Black Dragon RAM
Intel Core i5-3570k CPU
VTX3D AMD HD7950 3GB graphics card (with latest 14.4 drivers)
Asus Xonar D2X sound card
3x monitors (tried with just 1 enabled, no difference)

Also fails on my laptop, a Dell Vostro 3700 (Core i3-330m), which, of course, is running 8.1 also.

My only other PC in the house I could play it on is also Windows 8.1 (QX9650 @ 3GHz and HD 6970 2GB) - so a complete and utter waste of my time and money at the moment.

Just for diagnostics, it works perfectly fine on my Win 8.1 Pro U1 x64 (well, minus the Ubisoft server issues)

Asus P8H77-M LE motherboard
8 GB DDR3 Corsair RAM
Intel i5-3570k CPU
eVGA GeForce GTX 760 (driver 335.23 (current release))
2 monitors

Just for diagnostics, it works perfectly fine on my Win 8.1 Pro U1 x64 (well, minus the Ubisoft server issues)

Asus P8H77-M LE motherboard
8 GB DDR3 Corsair RAM
Intel i5-3570k CPU
eVGA GeForce GTX 760 (driver 335.23 (current release))

That is great to know... i have just wasted 2 hours of my life reinstalling system, now have windows 8.1 Pro with all the updates, newest ati drivers 14.4 and apart from uplay nothing else!!! the game is still in limbo after pressing start... not sure whether you have beta drivers or release, but this is what i am planning to do next: install release drivers instead of beta, we'll see what happens... report back in few minutes :)

Hm, the difference seems to be in the video card... ConfusedTA, what setup do you have?

Ebbemonke, I thought I'd noticed a pattern - that being that anything with an AMD graphics card wasn't working - but your 2nd PC with the nVidia 580 also isn't working - so that blows that theory out of the water! (Although, you do have an AMD CPU in that PC, the ones that are working so far in this thread are the Intel/nVidia combinations...)

It may be nothing, it may be something...

I'm certainly not reinstalling Windows (again) on my machine - and I've had no issues with anything else with the beta drivers, only this game.

OK mate, i agree with you, as you can see i have wasted at least 3 hours of my life trying to get it going, thinking there is something wrong with my PC's... i thought it was to do with beta drivers as bot PC's have newest beta installed, however now i know it is nothing to do with this as release drivers are not helping... at this point i have given up, RedLynx has to come up with a solution... until then will be playing the game from my portable HDD with windows 7 on it... got a bit drunk in the process but at least i have a fresh windows installed :)

Zagadka: a ty co, tez masz problem z uruchamianiem czy tylko starasz sie pomoc??!!

So, I kicked the girlfriend off the HTPC, and installed the game. It fired up.

QX 9650 @ 3ghz
4gb ddr3
AMD 6970 2gb
Windows 8.1 Pro x64 update 1

AMD 13.10 beta drivers

Good for you! As i said before i have a walkaround and played the game already but this is not the point!!! they need to fix this bug!!!! BTW try to beat my time on 1st track in Masters Gountlet...

Just a quick question: Do you all have multiple monitors + Windows 8.1 "Update 1" 64 bit (and an AMD graphics card)?

Turns out that we have both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 test computers here, but no computer with Windows 8.1 "Update 1". We are installing the "Update 1" and starting to analyze the issue ASAP.

That is a good support :)
Thank you!

Also we have the Enterprise version of Win 8.1 "Update" so we will verify that as well.

Just a quick question: Do you all have multiple monitors + Windows 8.1 "Update 1" 64 bit (and an AMD graphics card)?

My main PC has multiple monitors, yes. I did also disable the extra monitors and restart.

The only Windows 8.1 Update 1 machine I've had successfully running is running the 13.10 Beta drivers (it's my HTPC, so I don't update drivers very often)

However - I'm glad to hear that you're looking into the issue, and hopefully it's something simple to resolve and we can get the fix ASAP! :)

Just a quick question: Do you all have multiple monitors + Windows 8.1 "Update 1" 64 bit (and an AMD graphics card)?

well my main PC (FX8350 HD7970) has a single monitor (it is actually 37 inch TV), the other PC (Phenom1045t GTX580) is hooked up to 2 monitors (17inch monitor and OPTOMA Projector)... both PC's have Windows 8.1 with all the latest updates (including update 1), one is enterprise the other one is pro (thanks to you guys), both are 64bit systems...

Same here. Crashes after selecting a track. Frustrating to say the least.

I've toggled on and off my other monitors and it hasn't helped. I've also tried lowering the graphic settings and reducing the audio sample rate and channels which sometimes causes issues in other games. Nothing.

The game ran perfectly well during Beta on this machine.

I am running Windows 7 with 3 23" monitors.

AMD Phenom x4
ATI Radeaon HD 6970 with latest drivers
I am getting the same result. Does not launch. I even tried disabling multiple monitors and restarting machine and trying. Still no luck. I own 100+ games on steam and they all work fine. Def a bug with this game.

any time frame on fixing this issue? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to play!

I'd also like to know progress on this... have you had any luck replicating this problem on your test PC's?!

I have another bug for you to fix, while i am able to play the game on win7 32bit it is extremely annoying when the game slows down dramatically, this is random, happens on every track and every scenery (also screen tears are a bit annoying), I was able to get rid of these only by switching to windowed mode, the game seems to run perfectly fine in windowed?!

All in all, love the game, just get it fixed...

I have same problem but the exe doesn't even launch for me.
Uplay just shows the thanks for playing trials screen you should get after exiting the game.

Any update? Tomorrow Im just going to try and figure out how I get my money back if its not resolved.

apparently there is no update, quality customer service.

All good, they refuse to give the season pass to the people who bought the deluxe version.

This is the last UBISoft game i purchase thanks alot for showing your great customer service there.

It is my first, and quite possibly my last UBISOFT game if they don't get there act together and atleast give updates on the issues...

i mean seriously, update 1 came out like 2 weeks ago, it never crossed anyones mind to click "accept" when windows asked you to update, and more importantly didn't bother testing the game on the most recent version of windows?

Hello

We are still investigating.
Sebastian answered on the thread, we'll update again when we find out what happens, probably early next week.

Thank you,

Yup that's all I needed to know. I will be requesting a refund and will be disputing charge if denied. This was the first and last game I will ever buy from ubisoft. Very disappointing because the game did look like fun.

I may do the same. It's silly. I think we should be upgraded to the season pass. its ridiculous to buy a game and not be able to play it, and only get generic responses as to the issue.

Quite strange, for me works very well :nonchalance: I used the official Windows 8.1 Update 1 ISO, maybe is there a bug with the single update from Win8.1 standard?

Weird for me the game doesn't work with uplay online. But if I go offline it works fine.

This bug is not just isolated to windows 8.1 with update. It is also affecting windows 7 machines and when I reached out to ubisoft they even told me they have several people with the same issue. Hey I understand things take time but this game just launched. Its not like its been out for a while. There is a issue and the devs take the weekend off when I spent my hard earned money on the game. If you launch a game follow it the first week hardcore I would think to make sure its running well. This to me shows a direct attitude of Ubisoft and what I can expect in the future.

^^ I agree. I understand no one wants to work on the weekend, but I have no sympathy if you decide to launch a game right before the weekend, next time launch on monday if you can't deal with the weekend work. I have to say, its quite ridiculous. It will probably never be fixed, the devs will probably come back with its all our faults that our machines arnt working right.

Games and patches typically come out on Tuesdays for a reason

Yes, it works fine on our Windows 8.1 (Enterprise) Update 1 computers as well. We try to change the computer setups to reproduce this. We haven't yet tested on 7000 series Radeon with Windows 8.1 Update or with exotic multimonitor setups, etc. Going to do that today. All extra information (both software and hardware) about your computer setups is very valuable for us to be able to reproduce this bug. If we need to buy some extra components to repro this issue, that's not a problem.

For everyone having this problem:
Please run dxdiag.exe and send the generated .txt file to support@redlynx.com. Subject should be "Trials Fusion - startup problem". We need this info to determine exactly what is causing the problem. Thanks.

First of all thank you for your support, i'm very satisfied with the game and if it can serve you to reproduce bugs or to exclude other things these are my config specs:

ASUS Rampage II Extreme
Intel Core i7-930 2.80ghz oc to 3.1 ghz
12 GB of RAM (6 GB OCZ and 6GB Corsair) 1600mhz oc to 1708mhz
Asus nVidia GeForce GTX680 with 337.61 beta drivers
Roccat Kulo 7.1 USB HeadSet
Monitor LG M2380
Windows 8.1 Professional 64bit with Update 1 (fresh installation with original MSDN ISOs)

Hello Impostah,

When you say "doesn't work", what happens? Crashing? Freezing? Being slow?
Also, can you give us your hardware and OS configuration?

Cheers,

Works fine on my rig. Also 8.1.

Works also here on Radeon 7950 + Windows 8.1 Update (Enterprise). All different GPU manufacturer's tested, and some odd SLI setups as well. So far we can't be able to reproduce this problem no matter what we try.

Please send dxdiag dumps to support@redlynx.com (subject: Trials Fusion - startup problem). We need to find something similar between your hardware configurations that could cause this.

One question: Do you have some virtualization software installed (or have active remote desktop / SplashTop / etc connections)? Any unusual software installed?

OK some more details for you to replicate :), both my rigs have DVB-S2 cards installed (satellite dish hooked up to a PC) , apart from this i have a WHS2003 PC which acts as NAS, so both PC's have small HDD's just for system and all data (Documents, Pictures, Videos, Games etc.) is located on the server as active directory, all documents are being shared between 2 PC's (so i can start game on one PC and when my girfriend kicks me out from living room i can go to bedroom and continue to play on 100" projector screen (nVidia 3d vision by the way)), I have Virgin Broadband (if that makes any difference) SuperHub (in modem mode as their router is bag of ****) and 2 Belkin gigabit routers sharing one SSID (2 different channels)... both PC's have xBox 360 Wireless Receivers (I prefer to use controller instead of keyboard and mouse), will send you both dxdiags in a minute.. any more questions or suggestions let me know!

If you remember correctly i have reinstalled windows last week, apart from loading all drivers i have not done anything else but the game still would not launch

Also if you remember correctly the game starts perfectly fine on both PC's using my portable hdd with windows 7 32bit

Both PC's have avast free antivirus

well, naive me figured I would buy evolution to play and get used to while I waited for you guys to fix Fusion...well it does the exact same thing, works fine until I go start a level, then it boots me out of the game into uplay.

Hey!!!!! I fixed it myself!!!!!!! the problem with my setup was location of documents folder... it was located on server (\\server\xxx\documents) when i restored it defaults (c:\users\etc) the game ran flawlessly on my windows 8.1 machine!!!!!!! am unable to replicate this in the bedroom PC as my girfriend is still asleep, will try when back from work this afternoon! bear in mind the game files are still located on the server, just the documents i have hanged to default

that would explain why the game runs ok on my portable windows 7 hdd, (it is because documents are on that portable hdd instead of server!) it would also explain why others have similar problems running windows 7 perhaps? maybe its network protocol that is stopping it from running?!

I want a medal, can i get a medal?!

Ahh, interesting - I too have My Documents mapped to my server on my main machine, but not my other machine running 8.1 Update 1

Thank you guys!

Does it solve the problem for everyone or some of you still can't run the game on Windows 8/8.1?

I guess I figured out what was wrong with my spare computer with Win8.1 update 1. I edited the \Documents\TrialsFusion\SavedGames\local_config.xm l file to start the game in windowed mode and got a message saying that my GPU doesn't support DirectX 10.1. Before that I just got two game crashes back-to-back and no proper error message. This is actually the first time I've gotten a DirectX error with this machine. I had no idea Geforce 8800 gts (512mb version) doesn't support DirectX 10.1, must be pretty rare for games to use those 10.1 features. I guess I'll just have to wait until I get back home in a week and play the game with my proper computer :D

Thank for letting us know Lumiden. We'll check why you didn't have the message when you were in fullscreen.

Thanks for being a very big help for us! I will ask our IT support to setup me a computer that has similar documents structure, so I can see where everything goes wrong. Might be some path related bugs in our file system code.

I got your dxdiag dump. Unfortunately GeForce 8800 GTS is not supported by the game. The official minimum requirements are Geforce GTS 450 and Radeon 5770 (both DX11 cards). All DirectX 10.1 cards are under the official minimum requirements, but at least the beta build was running properly on Radeon 4870 (DX10.1 card).

Reproduced the bug, and fixed it. Will be included in the next PC patch. This fixes the game startup crash when the Windows documents folder is on a network folder.

Workaround until the patch is available: move your Windows documents folder into a local hard drive directory.

Can you expand on this? My documents are in at their default location and not mapped to a networked drive.

my windows docs is located in c:\user....and my game still fails.

is it possible that oem drivers or software could also be interfering causing this issue? and are the people still having this issue on the latest GPU drivers?

from my experience asus software likes to cause problems, i've had there gpu tweak cause issues in the past, there ai suite prevent my computer from shutting down and stuff which is why i'm putting this suggesting out there.

I too have tried moving my Documents folder back my C drive and reinstalling, but still crashing. I've already submitted my DxDiag yesterday to support. For others' reference, I'm on Window 8.1 Pro x64 with latest SP and patches. Fresh install of Windows on a new Samsung SSD, with documents, and Steam, located on my old HDD. My video card is Nvidia 8800 GTX - which has its own inherent problems and will not work with Windows 8.1 on the latest drivers (335.23 and 337.50 beta), so I'm using an older 314.22 driver which is compatible. Nvidia says they are aware of the issue and will fix in the next patch... hopefully.

I think Redlynx responded numerous times stating minimum requirement for GPU to be gtx450 and HD 5xxx, so i think your 8800gtx falls below minimum system requirements hence the game is not starting

Please forgive the lateness of my reply. I've just uninstalled and reinstalled the game as requested. The issue unfortunately persists. Things I've tried so far:

Un-installed and re-installed the game entirely.
Launch the game in uPlay offline mode.
Launch the game without a connected controller.
Launch the game in windowed mode.
Launch the game without any additional monitors plugged in.
Launch the game with reduced sound quality.
Verified that "My documents" is not on a network location.
Verified that my video drivers are up to date.

Please let me know if I can be of any more help.

This is still going on. I purchased this game on launch. I have the season pass and what a waste of money. Work around does not work for the documents folder and support was worthless. They told me they where not even aware of the workaround. This is the ONLY game that does not work on my pc. I am very upset with you guys and am trying to be as patient as possible but come on. You guys have a known issue here and ALOT are experiencing it. This feels like a novice company that im dealing with and you guys are supposed to be a large experienced company. Come on UBISOFT get with it.

Hello

There must be something special in the way your PC is setup because it looks like other people can play with this configuration.
The next patch will have generate crash dump when crashing but not even sure it will help for your case.
I don't know how we can help you, I'll discuss with the engineers.

Cheers,

I have submitted many logs to the guy that was helping me in support(Dustin). I even turned off all processes and start up applications besides trials fusion. Here's my thing. I would be reinstalling my O/S and everything if more than one game was having this issue. But I have 100's of steam games and I've tested a majority of even the ones I don't play anymore. They all work! None of them sit in the background as a process and do nothing!. By process of elimination by using that as my troubleshooting, then it obviously shows that the game is flawed where none of the other ones are. Bad code? Rush the game out? Limited testing? Im open for a engineer to contact me on the side or in a email. I just want to play the dang game that I paid for. Feeling some hardcore buyers remorse right now.

Hi,

Did you purchase the game on Steam, Uplay or retail?

Cheers,

I can say that I have found one thing, and likely this is causing a version of all the peoples issues here.
factors I have to share that I think are relevant
1. utilizing folder redirection as a group policy environment. THis means that my desktop, my documents are all redirected to a local network share automatically, although all applications use the "symlink" locally so they don't know the different. This is a very common feature used in small business.
1. I am using windows 8.1 x64 professional on the latest updates (as of today).

when searching for how to launch the game in windowed mode, I found instructions telling me to change settings in a trialsfusion folder in my "my documents" folder. this folder existed, but had nothing in it. no graphics xml files or anything like that. I figured this was a permission issue so I granted full access to everyone on that folder, but still nothing (even afger reinstalling).
I tried creating a "fake" my documents locally with the same name, but there is no INI or environmental variable in order to tell the game to look elsewhere.

simply put I can verify that I KNOW the reason mine is not working is because of the folder redirection. I am not willing to disable this feature as I always use the computers for business and simply put that is just not acceptable. no other game requires this change. Please help me in being able to relocate these files to something in the steamapps folder or something so that I can play the game. really excited to play but have had it since pre release not being able to. I have just figured this out as of today though. I tried creating the files manually but nothing works. Thanks.

Hello insanepartyguy,

The fix for the folder redirection is in the next patch.

Cheers,

Thank you for the prompt reply. 2 questions.
1. any esitmate on this time? a week, a month, a year? (sorry, just anxious to play)
2. do you know if I will need to reinstall the game? I guess I'll just remove it for now and await the answers here.

Hello insanepartyguy,

Hello,

I can't communicate the delay but it's much less than a month.
You won't need to reinstall, the game will get an update, that's all :)

Hello,
Same here, I just wonder if my problem comes from the same thing, as my OS is Win7 Ultimate x64.

My specs:
- nVidia GTX 570
- Intel Core I7 k875
- 16GO RAM
- OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Bought at the Fnac on a disc, activated on uPlay, at the beginning of April

Edit: I just remembered that when I saw that the disc build didnt work, I uninstalled and downloaded it... Although, it still didn't work.

Hello,

Can you describe a little bit more your problem? The game just doesn't start? An error message?

Thank you,

Hello,

Thank you,

Hey En0,

I know you weren't addressing me but I figured I would chime in with my own issue and similar issue to some of those in this thread. I have a Lenovo Y510p with Windows 8.1, Dual GeForce 755M SLI(I can provide more hardware details if you request.) I can get to the Trials Fusion Menu but when I go to play a track, it will give me: "trials_fusion.exe has stopped working, checking for a solution to this problem."

I've tried re-installing the game, turning off uPlay overlay, and using offline mode to no avail. All I can really find about this issue are some patchwork fixes that worked for some but nothing substantial. From the reading I've done outside this forum, this problem is known and we're waiting on a patch to fix these issues. What I want to know is: do you have any fixes that I can try to help alleviate this problem before said patch? Do you have an ETA on the patch and to your knowledge will this problem be fixed within the next patch? Is there anywhere I can e-mail besides support@redlynx.com to get an answer my problems?(No response when sending an e-mail with my DxDiag information attached.)

One odd thing I noticed is that I recently got Watch_Dogs as a present and lo and behold, Watch_Dogs crashes with the exact same error as Trials_Fusion albeit with different error codes in Event Viewer.

Hello En0-;
Actually, as I said, my own problem is exactly the same as the one the first poster had: nothing is displayed, but the executable is running in the list the Task Manager displays (I use an alternate version of it, named ProcExp, which is much better :P )
Thank you fur the support

Yeah so, if I could have an answer, that'd be great...

Hi LtEJostorm,

I have no idea what's happening with the game on your PC. That's weird.

A few questions that may help:

- Do you have the last drivers installed?
- Where is located your "My Documents" folder? (local harddrive? network drive?)
- Do you hear any sound from the game? (Ubisoft logo video for example)

Cheers,

Hi En0- ,

Thank you for responding. Let me answer your questions:

- My GPU driver is on the last version, although I have no idea about the other ones; i'm going to update this message as fast as possible with any intel I'll have
- My "My Documents" folder is on a network drive
- I have absolutely nothing coming from the game but the "UbisoftGameLauncher.exe" and "trials_fusion.exe" in Procexp. No sound, no image, just my desktop.

Cheers, LtEJostorm

Hello,

The problem comes from your "My Documents" folder. The way we were accessing it was not working with network drive. It's fixed in the patch that is incoming.

Cheers,

That's strange. We have three Win 8.1 test computers here (laptops and desktop) for testing. The game is working fine on those computers. Do you have the new Windows 8.1 Update installed?

I just loaded Forgotten Battles on my laptop, a HP ENVY M6-K010dx SLEEKBOOK running Windows *.1 with the June update, and it appears to work just fine the videos and the setup menus all respond. I just inserted the disc and let it autorun. The problem I'm having is finding 8.1 drivers for my Saitek X45.

I've been to the Siatek Website, but the drivers page is unavailable.

En0-,

When is this patch coming? This thread has gone quiet because people are tired of complaining and most Windows 8.1 users have no solution. I've never had a game where I had to wait more than a month to play it due to bugs and the need for a patch. Do you guys care anymore or have enough people grown tired of complaining to warrant your slow pace? I've sent e-mails to support@redlynx.com to fall on deaf ears with no response. So when, when is this patch coming? We're still waiting; we're just tired of getting no answers.

Hey Trelur,

The patch is out since the 18th and has the fix for this problem. Let me know if you still have this problem.

HI Trelur,

Patch 2 is already available for update. :)
It should contain a fix for this issue, please try it out and reply if you still have some problems.

Regards,

Thank you for the quick response, both of you. I apologize for my message of frustration but I am a huge fan of the Trials series and just want to get this issue resolved. Is this patch downloaded manually or is it downloaded automatically upon logging into Uplay? I still receive the "Trials_Fusion.exe has stopped working" message upon trying to enter the first race. This is the same message that I've gotten since buying the game around a month ago. I use a Lenovo Y510p with Windows 8.1. If you would like me to provide more hardware information or any other details whatsoever, please let me know. If it can assist in getting this game up and running, I'll provide as much detail as necessary.

Thank You.

Thank You.

Try to open Uplay and under "Play" button there is a "Verify files" option. This one should start looking for corrupted files and game updates.
But it should be done automatically right after you press "Play" button.

Regards,

Unfortunately, I only have the "Uninstall" option underneath the drop down arrow next to "Play." I assume I should have a "Verify files" option? Could this be an issue with uPlay? Please note that I purchased Trials Fusion through Steam as well.

In this case it's not Uplay issue. It means that you need to check latest update on Steam, but it should be done automatically.
One last this thing that you can try is to re install game in Steam. :( otherwise it means that you still experience this issue even with patch 2 :(

Go to Steam -> Library -> All Games -> Right Click on 'Trials Fusion' -> Click Properties -> Click tab named Updates -> Make sure it's set to 'Always keep this game up to date' -> Now click on Local Files -> Then click on 'Verify Integrity of game cache...'. This should check and redownload all missing files/updates for you.

I have tried re-installing the game on Steam in the past. I store most of my games on a secondary internal HDD. However, I have tried installing it on the OS C: drive as well with the exact same error. I just Verified the integrity of the Game Cache and I still receive the Trials_Fusion.exe has stopped working when trying to get into the first track.

Would you like the event viewer information?

Yes, definitely.
You can use this address (ben.ubi@mail.ru) to send it.

And what about in-game editor? Can you access it?

It crashed out. Same way the game does. Trials_Fusion.exe has stopped working. Also, I've sent you the Event Viewer information.

Ben, I sent my original post in more than a month ago. This game has been out since April. What is it going to take to get this to work?

Hello,

So we looked at the dump and the crash is inside the driver. We can't reproduce it, so we can't send it to the manufacturer neither.
It looks like your drivers are up-to-date, so it's the same as other people are using.
You may want to try to reinstall your driver.

Let us know if it helps.

Cheers,

I re-installed my drivers and made sure to do a clean installation of the latest drivers out on the Nvidia site and still my game crashes at the exact same spot. Where do we go from here? I had a very similar crashing issue when Watch_Dogs came out originally but the game was patched and I was fine afterwards. I did receive something different after the crash which was basically an error message telling me where the Ubisoft dump file for that crash was located. I don't recall ever seeing that message after trials crashed. I'll send the .dmp file over to Ben,
