How to write the calendar date with Roman numerals:
Dec-20-2017 = ?
(Month-Day, Year)
...

Roman numerals used to make the conversion:

I = 1; V = 5; X = 10; M = 1,000;

Reading rules

Month, Dec (12):

12 = 10 + 2;

10 = X;

2 = 1 + 1 = I + I = II;

12 = 10 + 2 = X + II = XII;

Day, 20:

20 = 10 + 10 = X + X = XX;

Year, 2017:

2017 = 2,000 + 10 + 7;

2,000 = 1,000 + 1,000 = M + M = MM;

10 = X;

7 = 5 + 1 + 1 = V + I + I = VII;

2017 = 2,000 + 10 + 7 = MM + X + VII = MMXVII;

The set of Roman numerals used for writing calendar dates

  • I = 1 (one); V = 5 (five);

  • X = 10 (ten); L = 50 (fifty);

  • C = 100 (one hundred);

  • D = 500 (five hundred);

  • M = 1,000 (one thousand);

    • For writing dates in the future:
    • (*) V = 5,000 or |V| = 5,000 (five thousand); see below why we prefer: (V) = 5,000.

    • (*) X = 10,000 or |X| = 10,000 (ten thousand); see below why we prefer: (X) = 10,000.

Note 1: (*) These numbers were written either with an overline (a bar above the number) or between two vertical lines (two vertical bars).

Note 2 (*) Instead we prefer to write these larger numerals between brackets "()" since: 1) when compared to the overline - it is more accessible to computer users; 2) when compared to the vertical line - it avoids any confusion between the vertical line "|" and the Roman numeral "I" (one).

  • So, (V) = 5,000 and (X) = 10,000.

Note 3: (*) Romans were not using right from the beginning numbers larger than 3,999, so they initially had no representation for numbers like:

  • 5,000 = (V), 10,000 = (X), 50,000 = (L), 100,000 = (C), 500,000 = (D), or 1,000,000 = (M).

These larger numerals were added later to the system and various different notations were used for them, not necessarily the ones above.

For a long time, the maximum number that could be written using Roman numerals was:

The total number of days between Wednesday, December 20th, 2017 and Friday, December 20th, 2019 is 730 days.

This is equal to 2 years.

This does not include the end date, so it's accurate if you're measuring your age in days, or the total days between the start and end date. But if you want the duration of an event that includes both the starting date and the ending date, then it would actually be 731 days.

If you're counting workdays or weekends, there are 522 weekdays and 208 weekend days.

730 days is equal to 104 weeks and 2 days.

The total time span from 2017-12-20 to 2019-12-20 is 17,520 hours.

This is equivalent to 1,051,200 minutes.

This site provides an online date calculator to help you find the difference in the number of days between any two calendar dates. Simply enter the start and end date to calculate the duration of any event. You can also use this tool to determine how many days have passed since your birthday, or measure the amount of time until your baby's due date. The calculations use the Gregorian calendar, which was created in 1582 and later adopted in 1752 by Britain and the eastern part of what is now the United States. For best results, use dates after 1752 or verify any data if you are doing genealogy research. Historical calendars have many variations, including the ancient Roman calendar and the Julian calendar. Leap years are used to match the calendar year with the astronomical year. If you're trying to figure out the date that occurs in X days from today, switch to the Days From Now calculator instead.
