Corel VideoStudio
Corel VideoStudio (formerly Ulead VideoStudio) is a video editing software package for Microsoft Windows.
Features[edit]
Basic editing[edit]
The software allows both storyboard and timeline-oriented editing. Different formats are supported for source clips, and the resulting video can be exported to DVD, AVCHD, HD-DVD and AVI. VideoStudio also supports direct DV and HDV capturing to disk.
Transitions[edit]
VideoStudio provides several categories of video transitions, including:
- FX contains assorted video effects such as 'Burn' and 'Fade to black'
- 3D provides assorted 3D transition effects
- Album a slideshow effect similar to that of a photo album.
Overlay[edit]
Users can overlay a Flash animation, an image, or text on the video. However, the number of overlays allowed is limited. The user must remove a particular color from the overlay video so that the required background or picture can appear in the foreground.
Other features[edit]
VideoStudio can change apparent video playback speed, reverse it, and modify hue and saturation. It provides tools that let the user trim, crop, and split video tracks. The soundtrack can be split from the video track, allowing the audio to play at a different pace than the video. A feature that Corel calls "SmartRender" renders only the edited portions of video, so a user can preview edited footage without VideoStudio creating temporary files. This feature also makes final rendering much faster.
Proxy Video Files[edit]
VideoStudio supports editing of high-definition video. Proxy files are smaller versions of the video source that stand in for the full-resolution source during editing to improve performance.
Plug-ins / Bundles[edit]
VideoStudio supports VFX-type plug-ins from providers like NewBlue.
The proDAD plug-ins Roto-Pen, Script, Vitascene and Mercalli-Stabilizer are bundled with X4, X5 and X6.
Multi-Camera Editor[edit]
From release X9 VideoStudio supports Multi-Camera Editing with up to 4 or 6 cameras depending on the version. This allows the user to sync and align clips, switch angles, cut, delete and add transitions.

Corel Unveils VideoStudio X7
Corel is now carrying out a soft launch of VideoStudio X7, a new version of its Windows-based video editing suite that will add native 64-bit performance, a new template-based FastFlick mode for quick editing, a simplified user interface (UI), and a raft of other new features.
Available immediately to existing customers, X7 will hit public availability on March 5, said Greg Wood, senior product manager, in a briefing for NotebookReview.
“VideoStudio X7 is the result of the most extensive research in our history,” according to Wood.
In conducting research among its customer base, Corel found that 52% are “occasional users,” in contrast to 79% among users of rival video editing suites. Also among VS users, another 29% are “frequent hobbyists,” whereas 2% are professional videographers and 17% use the software as part of their work in other types of jobs.
Corel also produces Pinnacle Studio, a video editing suite for the higher end of the market, and the Roxio line-up of content creation software for consumers.
About 66% of VS users are running Windows 7 64-bit. Comparable numbers are 23% for Windows XP, 16% for Windows 8 64-bit, and 17% for Windows 7 32-bit, according to Wood.
Faster Performance & Easier UI
“Performance is really important to these users. They’re taxing their systems all the time. They want speed and stability. They don’t want to stay up all night rendering videos,” Wood told NotebookReview.
Along with native 64-bit support, X7 adds Ultra HD (4K) performance. Wood estimated that rendering times are now five to eight times faster and acceleration is now two to five times faster than with X6.
“We’ve also made investments in improving the UI. Tools are more readily available. We’ve smoothed some of the lines, changed the color palette, and delivered more of a sense of quality,” he contended.
Users asked for an “easy edit” mode, too. Previous editions of VS include a movie wizard for rapidly compositing a production. “But the most compelling features of the wizard were completely invisible to the consumer,” Wood noted.
FastFlick Mode
The new FastFlick mode, on the other hand, allows users to quickly create a movie from photos or other media with titles, custom music, and online sharing through YouTube.
Although all of X7 is touch-enabled, FastFlick is “built for touch from the ground up,” he observed. “You can also take a video out of FastFlick and put it into VideoStudio for advanced editing.”
Also for more more advanced users, X7 introduces niceties such as chapter points for DVD authoring and a new color patterns library.
No Mac Edition Planned
Unlike the competing Adobe Premiere Elements, VideoStudio is only available for Windows. “We’re not planning a Mac edition, although you can run VideoStudio on the Mac in virtualization mode,” he said.
VideoStudio Pro X7 is priced at $79.99 for the full edition and $59.99 for an upgrade. VideoStudio Pro Ultimate — a version which adds extensive libraries of special effects plug-ins — is priced at $99.99 for the full edition and $79.99 for an upgrade.
