Avast License File Archives

Avast remains in trial mode with limited functionality until you insert the license file into the program, so it's best to activate it as soon as you can. When you purchased an Avast program, you received a confirmation email containing a license file. Once you've downloaded the license file to your computer, you might have trouble finding it. Even if you don't remember where you saved the file, you can quickly locate it with the Windows search tool.

Sign into your email account and look for a message from Avast or Element 5 Notification with the subject "Download Link and License."

Look for the attached license file near the top of the message. Save the file to a location on your computer.

Launch the Avast product, and then click "Admin" and "Insert License File."

Navigate to the location where you saved the license file. Click the file, and then click "Open." If you don't know the file's location, open the Windows Start screen and mouse over the top right corner of the screen to reveal the search bar. Type "license.avastlic" (without quotes) in the search bar, and then click "Files." Click the license file in the results list to view its location.

Click "Yes" to restart your Avast program. Click the "Admin" tab and confirm that your subscription status reads "Active."

If you purchased and used an Avast license to activate an Avast product on your computer, you need to keep the license file safe. If you reinstall Microsoft Windows on your computer for any reason, you need to reinstall the Avast product. The product will not be licensed until you use the license file again, so your computer and the valuable data stored on its hard drive will not be protected from online threats. You can't find the Avast license file in the directory that contains the Avast program, but you can get it from Avast directly.

Navigate to the Resend Purchased License page (link in Resources) on the official Avast website. You can use any Web browser to access the page.

Enter the email address you used when you first purchased the Avast license into the "Your Customer E-mail" field and click the "Resend License" button.

Log in to your email account and open the email you received from Avast to get your license file.
