DJI Assistant 2 For PC Windows Software Download Updated Version

Here we detail how to update the Phantom 4 Firmware. It’s important to update the firmware when for example new features are released, or important issues are fixed. You should note however that we have a few suggestions regarding firmware updates. If you have an important flight planned and have had no issues with your current firmware version, do not upgrade yet. Why do we recommend this? Simple, after each Phantom 4 firmware update it’s important to test the functionality of the quadcopter in a spacious & safe environment. For this test flight, it helps to not have pressure to “get that important photo or video”.

UPDATE: 

What’s New in v1.1.411:

1. Fixed the camera live view so it does not become blurry when using a color profile, i.e. D-Log, B&W, etc.

Note: Some people were having issues with blurry footage using specific Color modes in version 1.1.410. This update fixes this issue.

What’s New in v1.1.410:

1. Added a feature to automatically turn off the Front LED while shooting still photos or videos.
2. Enable this feature in the “Camera Settings” section of the DJI GO app.
3. Optimized altitude adjustment logic so that the aircraft automatically adjusts its altitude according to changes in terrain while using ActiveTrack (available when the aircraft is flying within 10 meters of the ground).
4. Optimized camera and lens spectrum parameters.
5. Improved Propeller Guard recognition to reduce the chances of misdetection.

Note: Firmware updates for both the aircraft and remote controller is required.  If you intend to upgrade the firmware through the DJI GO app, be sure to first update the Android version of DJI GO to v2.7.2 before upgrading the firmware for the aircraft and the remote controller.

DJI released firmware update version v1.0.0288 for the Phantom 4. The DJI Assistant 2 Software for Windows & Mac just went live (Download Here). The DJI GO App has been updated to version 2.7.0 for both iOS and Android.

What’s New in v1.0.0288:

1. Improved download speed for photo and video files.
2. Changed procedure for stopping motors during flight (CSC Command). To stop motors during flight, pull the left stick to the bottom inside corner while simultaneously pressing the Smart RTH button. This new procedure will only become available when Remote Controller firmware is updated to the latest version.
3. Optimized Low Battery descent logic.
4. Added support for HDMI expansion module on the remote controller.
5. Optimized control stick movement performance in TapFly mode.
6. Added support for recognizing non-human subjects.
7. Optimized sound effect for powering on the aircraft.
8. Added propeller guard detection. Obstacle Sensing system is automatically disabled when a propeller guard is installed.

Steps to update the Phantom 4 Firmware via DJI GO in App Update:

1. Download version 2.7.0 of the DJI App.
2. Launch DJI GO App.
3. Ensure you have at least 50% Battery in your aircraft and remote control battery.
4. On Home Screen you should get an Update Available pop-up once the Aircraft is turned on.
   1. If this doesn’t occur click the Camera Button to launch the Camera View.
   2. Tap the top status bar in top center of the screen.
   3. Under Overall Status it should now say Update available/required.
   4. Tap Update.
5. When the Update Dialog gets to 99% it will ask you to unplug and re-plug the smartphone/tablet cable.
6. If you have issues with the Update see the section titled “If you have Issues with the In-App Update:” below.

How do I figure out what version the Phantom 4 aircraft, remote control or DJI GO App is at?

1. In the DJI GO App launch the Camera View.
2. Tap the top right Menu icon.
3. On the popped up Menu tap the three dots (…) on the left bottom menubar.
4. Scroll down to other > About.
5. Tap About.
6. See App Version, Aircraft Version, RC Version.

If you have Issues with the In-App Update:

1. Turn off the quadcopter and the remote control.
2. Delete the DJI GO App.
3. Reinstall the DJI GO App through your Appstore.
4. Restart the Firmware Update in the DJI GO App.
5. When you are asked to unplug and re-plug in the cable also power cycle the quadcopter (power quadcopter off and on while cable unplugged).
6. After 100% complete, power cycle the quadcopter again and also power cycle the remote control.

Steps to update the Phantom 4 Firmware with the DJI Assistant 2:

1. Ensure Phantom 4 battery is at minimum 50% charged.
2. Ensure the PC you will use for the upgrade is connected to the internet.
3. Download the DJI Assistant 2 Software from DJI. (HERE)
4. Connect the aircraft to a PC via the supplied microUSB cable.
   1. Plug the microUSB plug into the microUSB port located on the left side of the drone just right of the microSD card slot.
      
   2. Plug the USB part of the cable into your PC.
5. Launch the DJI Assistant 2 App on the PC.
6. Click Login on the top right of the App.
7. Login with your DJI Account. If you don’t have one create one using the Sign Up button.
   
8. Select & Click Phantom 4 on the left side of the Screen.
   
   
9. Click Upgrade for the available Firmware Packages on the right side of the Screen.
   
   
10. Click Start Upgrade.
    
    
11. Wait for the firmware package to download. 
    
12. The update will start right after the download has finished.
    
13. A few notes about the Update Process:
    1. It takes about 15 minutes.
    2. The Phantom 4 will not Beep as the Phantom 3 or Phantom 2 used to.
    3. Do Not Remove the USB cable during the update.
    4. It’s normal for the gimbal to go “limp”.
    5. The indicators and status LED’s may flash abnormally.
    6. The aircraft may reboot on its own.
14. Reboot the Phantom 4 after the firmware update is complete.
15. Check IMU Values in the DJI Go App.
16. Calibrate the IMU (for best results let the Phantom 4 cool off and then Recalibrate. IMU calibration on cooled off Phantoms allow for better calibrations).

Launch the DJI Go App while everything is connected (leave the propellers OFF). Ensure your settings for Return-to-Home mode are correct. Go through any settings that you may have changed before and ensure they are set to your liking. You can test out the camera while you are at it.

In the early days of drones, there was the DJI GO app for consumer-class DJI drones, after that came the DJI GO 4 app for drones launched in 2016 and later. With the launch of the DJI Mavic Mini in 2019, the new DJI Fly app was released. These are the best tools available to process an update for your DJI drone.

Please note, the steps that follow will work for many DJI drones, but not all. Also, the exact screens have been known to change from time to time: please use the following as guideline, follow the prompts in the software for best results.

It’s important we also note that the manual update via PC with the DJI Assistant 2 program hasn’t been working every time, use the mobile apps to run the updates where possible.

Update frequency

In the case of the DJI Spark, there have only been a few updates by the time we wrote this article. Which makes sense, the drone was only announced a couple months prior. Of course, I’m writing this in August of 2017, there are sure to be more updates by the time you read this.

Pro tip: Be patient

When you first boot up your DJI Spark, Mavic Air or Mavic Pro, they take a moment or two to perform all of their self tests and otherwise initialize for flight. You may notice that, even after a full update cycle, the DJI GO 4 app on your mobile device claims your firmware is out of date. Give it a moment. Let your drone find some satellites, sync some settings and perform all of its self tests before you react.

This goes for IMU calibration and more. Give your machine a moment, it may not need quite as many updates and calibrations as it initially says it does.

Update methods

As mentioned, there are multiple ways to process an update for a DJI drone. For your Spark or Mavic Pro you’ll either be plugging into your PC, or utilizing the DJI GO 4 app on your connected smartphone or tablet.

The app is convenient, and can be used on the go. We used to recommend using the DJI Assistant program on your PC. Currently on DJI Assistant 2. However, the assistant program hasn’t been updated to work with all new drones.

Before you update

Before you process an update on your DJI drone, we have a few things we’d like to recommend you do. They’re easy and predictable, but allow us to say them aloud just in case.

First, remove your microSD card and manually backup your flight footage and photos. This is not necessary, not at all, just a habit we’ve gotten used to to ensure we have our files. This is also a good time to delete files from the card to make room for more, but we’ll leave file management for another day.

Re-insert your microSD card before you update. Again, not necessary, just good practice.

Second, charge everything. No, seriously, go into an update with a full battery on your drone, the remote, your mobile device and your computer, if applicable. This is especially true if you are updating via the mobile app, I’ve seen an update consume an entire Mavic Pro battery before.

DJI requires a minimum battery level of 50% on the drone, 30% on the remote, before you can initiate an update anyway, go in full and avoid any hassle.

Third, give yourself time. It rarely takes more than five minutes to process an update to these drones, but it can. I believe my longest Mavic Pro update was just shy of fifteen minutes, but that other Mavic I spoke of above was over thirty minutes, which is why it ate an entire battery.

Fourth, have good internet. Updating on the go is fine, a firmware update for the Spark, Mavic Air or Mavic Pro is not a huge download, but it is not all that small if you are counting your MB on a data plan. More important, your home internet is likely faster and more reliable than your mobile internet connection. Especially true if you forgot to update sooner and you are already up a mountain or far from a tower out at the beach.

Update via DJI GO 4 or DJI Fly mobile app

DJI has made it very easy to update your drone from within the DJI GO 4 and DJI Fly apps on your mobile device. Actually, you’d have to intentionally avoid the updates, if you don’t want them.

Even before you ‘Enter the drone’ in the app, you will see a generic notification that there is an update available. The default check on my app was for the Spark – if you were wondering why you see the Spark update on the Mavic Pro in the image.

As you well know, each time you fire up your drone and the application, it self-checks for firmware consistency and more. In earlier days a notification saying you needed to update was about all you got, today, a little window pops up with a button to install the update. Super simple.

Swipe the button over to initiate the update. Then just sit back and allow the update to download and process.

Once complete, the drone will restart, you’ll see the confirmation message and you can get back to flying.

Update via DJI Assistant 2

The process is actually fairly simple,  DJI Assistant 2 on your PC is a program like any other, then you use a USB cable to connect the drone, follow the on-screen instructions and your drone updates. Easy stuff. Let’s see it in action, just for fun.

Fire up the DJI Assistant 2 program on your PC.

Connect your drone to the PC via USB cable and then power on the drone.

You will see your drone listed in the DJI Assistant 2 program, click on it to proceed.

You will see the most recent firmware releases for your drone. Look for the “Current” and “Latest Version” indicators to see which software you have installed. If not fully updated, click on the big blue Upgrade button to continue.

A self check is initiated, if your setup does not satisfy some simple needs you will be asked to remedy before you can continue. Click Start Update when ready.

Sit back and enjoy!

DJI Assistant 2 will process through a few screens, keeping you in the loop what is going on with a progress bar for each process. Watch through Downloading, Transmitting and Updating until you see the big green check mark. Congratulations, your machine is up to date.

Hit that Back button to exit back to the firmware list, feel free to look through the other tabs available, but hit that left arrow in the very top left when you are ready to exit. Then power down the drone and disconnect the USB cable.

Repeat the process for the remote control of the Mavic Pro as well. The Spark remote must be done through the DJI GO 4 application, for some reason.

Updating the firmware on your DJI Drone is getting easier and easier as the drone manufacturer perfects its systems. Your Mavic Pro and Spark are popular machines destined to receive many new and exciting features added through these firmware updates. Don’t be afraid to install them, there may be a treat hidden in there.

First thing's first

The first thing to do is download and install the DJI Assistant 2 application on your PC. There are a few different versions of it, and while the features and how the apps work is basically the same, each version is specific to different drones.

There's a version for most of the drones made in 2018 and earlier, including the Mavic Pro and Mavic Air, a dedicated version for the Mavic 2, the Phantom, and many other DJI products besides. All you need to do is make sure you check you're selecting the right version for your drone from the downloads page.

It's also a good idea to use whatever USB cable came with the drone to connect it to your PC. We've experienced issues that were rectified simply by using this cable instead, so it's a good idea to make sure you use it.

How to update your DJI drone firmware with your Windows PC

The app will now download the latest firmware and flash it to your drone. The process will take a little while and the drone will reboot as part of it.

Besides being an easy way to update to the latest firmware, you can also use DJI Assistant 2 as a way to reset your drone to factory settings, refresh the current firmware installation, or downgrade to an older build if there are bugs you're not happy with in the newer ones.

Unless your drone and controller have consistent firmwares, you'll get warning messages when you try to fly and you'll be forced to update before taking off. So while you're updating the drone, update its controller in a very similar way using your PC.

By using it you can minimize your risk of having to download anything before you fly, though as it can't handle battery firmware updates, you'll still need to download these through the DJI Go app on your phone or tablet.
