**The most current version of EndNote available is EndNote X9. This guide provides assistance with using EndNote X7. You may experience things differently when using X8 or X9.
EndNote is a desktop-based program that lets you manage and organize all of your references, import multiple references from databases, insert references easily into papers, and create instant bibliographies.
It must be purchased from USask IT Acquisitions, but once purchased you will own the product forever. When used in conjunction with the online EndNote basic (free) you can share references with colleagues and access references anytime or anywhere.

Students and faculty can download references directly from Web of Science,other ISI Web of Knowledge products, PubMed and library catalog, as well as export citations from countless other databases, into folders for access and use between sessions. The user logs into the service using a self-registered username and password. Formatted reference lists can be created in a variety of publishing styles. While you Write can be used in Microsoft Word to automatically integrate citations into a paper.License Information: There are no restrictions to the number of simultaneous users. Access is restricted to current students, faculty, and staff of the University of Saskatchewan, and to "walk-in" users of the University of Saskatchewan Library for educational, research, and non-commercial personal use. It is accessible in the library, on campus, and remotely. Access will continue as long as the Library licenses any product available on the Web of Knowledge interface.
Q. The CWYW toolbar isn’t appearing on Word on a Mac.
To make the tools work with EndNote X and later or EndNote online and Word or later do the following:
- EndNote X and later: Open EndNote, go to the EndNote X7 menu and choose "About EndNote X7" and verify that the about window shows EndNote X (Bld ) or later. You can download EndNote X Update here. EndNote online: You can download the latest EndNote online tools here.
- Open Word. In Word, click on the Word menu and select About Word. Make sure this reads at least version If you do not have this version click on the Help menu and select Check for Updates. Follow the steps to update Word. If the Auto Update is not able to locate latest version for some reason, you can download the update here
Note: If you updated Word to the bit version, be sure to update EndNote to version X for compatibility. If you have not updated EndNote and have the update for Word , you will see the message "Word was unable to load an add-in." - EndNote X7: Close Word and go to EndNote.
EndNote online: Close word and install the tools using the installer, Drag the Cite While You Write folder to your applications folder then open that folder and run the CWYW_Installer file found here. If it's not working after proceed to the next set of instructions. - Click the EndNote menu and select "Customizer."
- Check the box in front of the "Cite While You Write" option.
- Click next until the Customizer is finished. Open a library.
- Then open Word and check the Ribbon for the EndNote tab. (NOTE: The EndNote CWYW tools no longer appear under the Tools menu; rather appears as a separate tab in Word)
You should now see the EndNote tab in the Ribbon of Word . If you are not seeing the EndNote tab, follow these steps:
- Close Word and EndNote.
- Open your hard drive and go to the following folder:
EndNote X7: Applications: EndNote X7: Cite While You Write
EndNote online: Applications: Cite While You Write:Cite While You Write
Copy the file "EndNote CWYW Word bundle" by highlighting the file and going to "Edit > Copy."
NOTE: If you do not see the "EndNote CWYW Word bundle" file in the "Applications: EndNote X7: Cite While You Write" folder (or if this file is not the most up to date version), you can follow these steps:- Download a copy of the latest EndNote online tools here.
- Run this file and follow the steps to install the tools in Word.
- Skip step 3.
- Go to the folder "[Hard Drive Name] : Library : Application Support : Microsoft : Office : User Content : Startup : Word" and paste the file, "Edit > Paste."
Note: If you have trouble finding the above location you need to click on Finder (in the Dock the icon of a face) to the right of Finder click on the Go menu then click on Computer then click on the Macintosh Hard Drive. You should then be able to follow the path above.
Note: In non-English versions of Word, the folder named "Startup" may be called "Start" or be in the localized language of Word. - Start Word, go to "Word > Preferences" and click on "File Locations."
- If the Startup folder is set to any location, highlight "Startup" and click on "Reset."
- Click "OK" and Quit Word.
- Start EndNote and then start Word.
Additional troubleshooting information:
EndNote X and X Tools Not Updating
If you have updated EndNote X7 to version X (Bld ) and X () but the "EndNote CWYW Word bundle" file in the "Applications: EndNote X7: Cite While You Write" folder has not been updated, please follow these steps:
- Download a copy of the latest EndNote online tools here.
- Run this file and follow the steps to install the tools in Word.
- Start Word. If the tab in Word reads EndNote instead of EndNote X7, see this article to swap the tools.
Missing or Phantom Tab in Word: After updating Microsoft Word , you may have seen the EndNote tab disappear or appear as a phantom tab. Please see this article: www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com

Grant Access:
When you first launch Microsoft Word after installing the EndNote X or the EndNote online CWYW tools, you will see a dialog asking to Grant Access.
"EndNote needs access to the file named 'www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com'. Select this file to grant access."
The file should already be selected in the correct location (Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Preferences). Simply click Grant Access the first time and it should not prompt you again. This is due to Word being a "sandboxed application."
Missing 'www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com' file:
If the 'www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com' file is missing from the list, please follow these steps:
· Click Cancel when prompted to Grant Access.
· Click the Word menu and select Quit Word.
· Download the 'www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com' archive from the Attachments section to the right of the article.
· Unzip this file to extract the 'www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com' file.
· Place this file in the "Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Preferences" folder.
Note: To get to the Library folder, hold down the "option" key on your keyboard and go to the "Go" Menu and choose "Library".
· Restart Word.
· Grant Access to the 'www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com' file in the "Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Preferences" folder.
Should there be any issue with this process and permission not getting properly granted, do the following:
- Quit Word, Go to the Go menu and hold down the option key and choose "Library" here, go to the containers folder and find and remove the "www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com" folder
- Reboot and empty the Trash.
- Run the Customizer for EndNote X7 or the CWYW_Installer file for EndNote online to install the tools.
Tools are Present, but not responsive:
If you are seeing the EndNote X7 or EndNote tab in the ribbon, but the commands are not functional or only beep or do nothing when clicked, some settings may need to be reset. Do the following to resolve this:
- Create a compressed backup of the library.
- Quit EndNote and Word.
- Open Finder, hold down the "option" key on your keyboard and go to the "Go" Menu and choose "Library" then open the "Preferences" folder.
- Remove the "www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com" file.
- Browse to is the "[Hard Drive Name] : Library : Application Support : Microsoft : Office : User Content : Startup : Word" folder.
- Delete the "EndNote CWYW Word bundle" file.
- Launch EndNote X7.
- Run the Customizer to install the Cite While You Write tools. With EndNote online, run the CWYW_Installer in the Cite While You Write folder in applications.
Tools are Missing, but everything appears correctly configured:
If the issues persist, Try resetting your word preferences:
- Quit EndNote, Word and any Microsoft application.
- Find and drag the www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com template to your desktop.
- To access this folder, please click on the Go menu of your Finder and then press the "Option" key on your keyboard. Library should then appear as an option in the Go menu. Click this and proceed to Group Containers : www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com : User Content : Templates to find the www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com file.
- Rename this file www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com
- Look for any pre Normal templates on your computer. Drag them to the desktop and rename. The location would depend on the version of Word:
- Word and : Click on the Go menu of your Finder and then press the "Option" key on your keyboard. Library should then appear as an option in the Go menu. Click this and proceed to Application Support:Microsoft:Office:User Templates to find the www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com file.
- Word Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Documents:Microsoft User Data.
- Word X: Microsoft Office X:Templates.
- Remove or rename the following files/folders if they exist:

Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Preferences:Microsoft:Word Settings (10)

EndNote and EndNote Web
EndNote is software package for creating bibliographies and managing references.
There are four versions available:
- EndNote Basic (Free Version) is a no-cost limited web version with 21 styles and a limited number of filters and connection files. This version is available to anyone. A maximum of 50, references and of 2 GB of attachments is allowed.
- EndNote Basic (Web of Science Version) is a limited web-based version available to Stanford faculty, students, and staff as part of our subscription to Web of Science. Like the free version of EndNote Basic, a maximum of 50, references and of 2 GB of attachments is allowed. In addition, the Web of Science version of EndNote Basic has over 6, styles and hundreds of filters and connection files.
- EndNote, also known as EndNote Desktop, is the stand-alone full software package for a personal computer. Stanford users can purchase the most current version at the academic price at the Stanford Bookstore.
- EndNote Online is an expanded version of EndNote Basic that is available once your EndNote Desktop software is associated with your EndNote Basic account. Unlike EndNote Basic, EndNote Online allows an unlimited number of references and attachments. EndNote Desktop can synchronize references with EndNote Online.
- NOTE: Earlier versions of EndNote Basic and EndNote Online were called EndNote Web. "EndNote Web" can loosely refer to any of the EndNote versions available via the web. However, there is no EndNote product that is currently called "EndNote Web".
To create an EndNote Basic or EndNote Online account:
- Navigate to Web of Science--All Databases.
- Click on link to access Web of Science.
- On the Web of Science site, under "Tools", select "EndNote".
- Click on "Register".
- Follow the prompts to register with Web of Science.
- Return to the Web of Science home page and under "Tools", select "EndNote" again.
- Sign in with the just-created username and password.
- You will need to agree to the terms and conditions before using the service.
