Any Sonos users out there?

I'm hoping to build some support to get Sonos to support www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com as a music service. It would be great to navigate this treasure trove of concert recordings and play them through the Sonos audio system.

The following post is copied from the Sonos forums (this may require some active participation from the www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com development community):

=========

A lot of the new features requested here involve the adding of new services. The world of online music is evolving fast, and to help services integrate with Sonos, Sonos has introduced a Partners and Developers program:
www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com

It is an API made to ease the integration of internet based-services in the Sonos system.

So if you have an idea/request for a certain service to be integrated into Sonos, there is an easy way for those services to make it happen. So anyone requesting a service: Request it at the service provider themselves! They can now make it happen! That will be the most effective way from now on to get your favorite site into your Sonos system. Plus: The more requests a service gets, the better the chance it gets implemented.

=====

Not quite sure how to get this rolling. Any Deadheads out there tuned in to www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com that use Sonos? Please chime in and post a reply to my Sonos forum post to show your support.

www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com?t=

Thank you.

fyi, Brad: The Internet Archive is not a "(free) music service". The Archive is a free online Public Library. Sonos dot com is a commercial web site! Web pages there are full of commercial ads and sales pitches!

The Archive's "Terms of Use"
"Access to the Archive’s Collections is provided at no cost to you and is granted for scholarship and research purposes only. In particular, you certify that your use of any part of the Archive's Collections will be noncommercial and will be limited to noninfringing or fair use under copyright law."
GD's STATEMENT TO MP3 SITE OPERATORS (posted on the top of The Archive's GD home page):
"The Grateful Dead and our managing organizations have long encouraged the purely non-commercial exchange of music taped at our concerts and those of our individual members. That a new medium of distribution has arisen - digital audio files being traded over the Internet - does not change our policy in this regard. Our stipulations regarding digital distribution are merely extensions of those long-standing principles and they are as follow:"

"No commercial gain may be sought by websites offering digital files of our music, whether through advertising, exploiting databases compiled from their traffic, or any other means. All participants in such digital exchange acknowledge and respect the copyrights of the performers, writers and publishers of the music."

"This notice should be clearly posted on all sites engaged in this activity. We reserve the ability to withdraw our sanction of non-commercial digital music should circumstances arise that compromise our ability to protect and steward the integrity of our work."

Thanks for the clarification on that. I was thinking of Sonos as just another device for delivering streaming content, but I can certainly understand how this crosses the line based on your post. The good news is that this streaming content can be delivered through the Sonos system with very little effort and it sure beats listening to these recordings through PC speakers!

Took a little trip down memory lane last night with Cornell I LOVE this site!!!

I know this thread is old, but I'd like to hear how to stream www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com to Sonos. How are you doing it?

Thanks!

Streaming archive-hosted M3U streams is technically possible. However I don't think there are yet any user-friendly apps/plugins/tools that allow one to do this without some hacking. I have been looking into this myself and this is what I know so far:

* Sonos allows 3rd parties to create "plugins," which is they way that all these services can stream into a Sonos system.
* Once the 3rd party signs up to be a sonos partner, they are able to access the APIs to control Sonos players. This API can then be used to either create your own app and/or create a plugin that shows up as a service in the Sonos system.
* This is where the partner signs up: www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com
* Although the API is officially only open only to partners, the API uses standard web service comms which are not encrypted. Therefore, some enthusiasts have been able to learn the API by watching network traffic at their homes.
* Here is a link to an enthusiast who has done just this: www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com
* And most importantly, if you check the docs on the above-mentioned programmer's gitHub site, there is a very nice looking method which shows how to stream from www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com!! See this link www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com look for the method call to www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com_uri(www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com)
* there is also another promising REST based API here: www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com

I am going to:
* play around with these APIs and see if I can get something working
* look into how to create an official plugin

If all goes well with these things and if there is interest from the www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com community, I would volunteer to help create an www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com plugin for sonos.

All thoughts/feedback are welcome.

Thanks
Adam

This reason doesn't hold water to me since the Logitech Squeezebox offers the Live Music Archive as a streaming radio service. There doesn't appear to be much difference between the Logitech service and that of Sonos, so I hope it's only a matter of time before sonos or someone else figures this out.

With respect, I think that you have misunderstood what Sonos is. Sonos is a system that lets you stream music in your house from 3rd party "streaming services." Using Sonos is similar to using your PC, Airplay, squeezebox, etc to stream www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com-hosted M3Us. So, IMHO if you consider streaming GD M3Us to a music system to be a breach of www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com and/or GD "Terms of Use," then I think it would be necessary to remove all M3U streams from the site since there are other commercial products (named above) that currently perform the same function.

www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com and the GD clearly want to allow individuals to access these m3u streams and mp3s privately in their homes. Sonos simply gives people another way to do that.

Therefore, enabling www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com m3u streams to play through Sonos is not a breach of the www.spearpointsecuritygroup.com Terms of Use.

    Slick kludge (not anymore)

Update: Changed my rating from 2 stars for v. 8 to 4 stars for v. Especially impressed by your response to user feedback. There is zero chance of my buying a HomePod or whatever it’s called now.

Archive this: Disappointing update people. I cannot understand how you’re getting 5 star reviews from anyone who’s used the controller for any length of time. First, and forgetting the UI’s appearance for a second, the move to privilege songs over albums is misguided. Choosing an album now gives me a mountain of icons for individual songs to choose from that album. It’s unclear how to just play an album or add an album to the queue with one click or a hard press as in prior versions. Also, the Rooms navigation is awful. There used to be immediate access at the top of the screen to individual rooms. Navigating to the list now, even with the button on the bottom is aggravating. It should always be available on screen. You have complicated the controller in many ways under the guise of simplifying the look of the interface. The interface is cleaner, yes, and I don’t mind the white as others do. What bugs me is that the cleanliness of the look destroyed the ease of use that was there up to now. I don’t want to fumble around relearning how to use the controller effectively. I just want to listen to music quickly and easily. I especially want to be able to play albums quickly and easily. Looking forward to version 9.

    New beginnings with the Beam

Okay we had a 10 year old Sony 46” Bravia TV and Bose Acoustimass 15 home theater speakers run through a Sony amp. So we decided to move up to a LG 65” c8 television. Love it, but that’s another review. The Bose was great for music but was always problematic trying to get it working properly for surround sound. The Sony and Bose never really jived with each other. So as a result we seldom used it. Anyway, friends told me about Sonos speakers and since we had the new TV I decided to purchase the Beam sound bar, the sub woofer and two play 1 speakers to make a surround system for the new LG. Man it sounds great. We are very please with the system and the ease of setup and use. It is pricey when it comes to the sub woofer. However the sub really completes the system so I would say if you can swing it $$$, go for it. We chose the Beam over the larger Sonos sound bar because the Beam has a HDMI hook up with “ARC” and Alexa built in if that’s important to you. I just didn’t want a optical connection that the bigger Sonos bar only comes with. However I would guess the larger sound bar probably sounds better.??? However don’t let the size of the Sonos Beam fool you, it's impressive. Anyway I can’t wait to add more speakers to our house later on. Very satisfied customer.

    Work around for ?

I’ve been a Sonos user since very early on. I have two Play:1 speakers that I use as a stereo pair. I was very disappointed when the v update, which apparently enabled Air Play on the One (plus other current models), disabled the home screen controls for those of us using the legacy speakers. I’ve also experienced the same as others where the last ~20 seconds of each track would be cut off when I was playing from a locked iOS device. I keep nearly all my audio on my iPhone & iPad and generally play straight from those devices’ libraries instead of from my Mac, as the latter spends most of its time in sleep mode.

Surprisingly I just accidentally got the lock screen controls re-enabled and the end-of-track cutoff seems to have gone away. For some reason one of my speakers dropped off the system and I couldn’t get it to reconnect, so I did a full-on controller reset on my iPhone. I also unplugged both speakers and then basically set my system back up, as if it was new. No idea why, but like I said this has caused the end-of-track dropout to go away and my lock screen controls to come back (even though Sonos says explicitly in their release notes that this function has gone away for those without Air Play compatible speakers).

Very weird, but now my system’s back to how I’ve used and loved it for the past years and it’s great! Hopefully some others might try this and have some luck getting full functionality back.

Yesterday, Sonos filed two lawsuits in opposition to Google over its wi-fi speaker tech. The corporate alleges that Google infringed on patents for syncing a gaggle of audio system over an area community, an concept that Sonos pioneered earlier than Google adopted up with merchandise just like the Dwelling and Dwelling Mini.

It’s not the primary time Sonos has filed a lawsuit over patent infringement. However patents don’t appear to be the guts of the problem right here. The true combat with Google is about monopolies and trendy computing — and a world the place a couple of big corporations run locked-down ecosystems and may merely eat their competitors.

Large corporations copying smaller ones is nothing new. Loads of startups like Sonos have modern concepts, solely to see bigger opponents launch comparable merchandise at cheaper costs. Typically these ways are unlawful, both as a result of the design immediately infringes on a patent or copyright or as a result of the massive firm’s ways rise to the extent of antitrust violations. Typically, the businesses are merely out of luck — vogue designers get ripped off continuously, for instance, and it’s usually fully authorized. (Google has clearly denied the accusations, saying it’s ready to defend its merchandise in court docket.)

However based mostly on Sonos executives’ interviews with The New York Instances, the ultimate straw wasn’t the alleged infringement. It was Google utilizing its Assistant voice command platform as a cudgel. Voice instructions have turn into a regular function on audio system, and Google Assistant is likely one of the most ubiquitous. Whereas the corporate provides a free software program growth equipment, it’s restricted to non-commercial use. That offers Google loads of energy over makers, and Google might have used it to retaliate in opposition to Sonos. One anecdote suggests Google set stricter phrases for utilizing Assistant, for instance, after receiving complaints in regards to the patents.

Google has monetary stakes in mainly each degree of computing programs like sensible audio system. It makes to place in individuals’s houses, similar to Sonos. Nevertheless it additionally makes a voice assistant that’s functionally an working system for these audio system — one thing Sonos didn’t have till a current acquisition. It runs companies that present content material like music. And it’s constructed software program that may mine voice knowledge for invaluable insights about customers. When Google finds a niche in its ecosystem, it usually simply acquires an organization that fills it, like Android, Nest, and Fitbit.

Which means Sonos isn’t simply going up in opposition to an even bigger firm with extra assets; it’s enjoying on a discipline operated by its greatest opponents that may use that affect to quietly scuttle helpful new options. In line with the Instances, Sonos needed to roll out simultaneous assist for Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa — an additional function that might justify the next value and set Sonos aside. However Google and Amazon reportedly pressured Sonos to drop the plan. (Amazon denies that it did so.) Sonos executives declare that Google maintains a standing ban on Assistant working alongside any competing product from Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, or Baidu.

Google is likely one of the strongest corporations on this house, however computing walled gardens are a lot larger than anybody firm. Microsoft famously tried to manage Home windows’ software program ecosystem within the ‘90s, resulting in a landmark antitrust case. Google opponents like Apple and Amazon have comparable sorts of vertical integration. This has led to bitter feuds wherein these corporations block every others’ companies from their , and it’s led to antitrust lawsuits from smaller gamers like Spotify — which has argued that Apple’s iOS App Retailer successfully “taxes” the unbiased music app to the benefit of its personal Apple Music service. In the meantime, customers find yourself with fewer practical selections since they must declare allegiance to an ecosystem earlier than they purchase a gadget.

It’s an industry-wide downside, and simply getting Google to license patents gained’t remedy it. Large corporations can nonetheless legally copy the idea of a product since you&#;ll be able to’t patent an concept — and customers would lose out on plenty of improved, refined designs if that weren’t true. The issue is creating an surroundings the place corporations can compete on the deserves of their merchandise.

So what’s the answer? One excessive choice is to interrupt up this huge, vertical chain in order that Google’s voice assistant division, for instance, wouldn’t have the identical revenue motive as its speaker division. (This might additionally make it simpler for different voice assistants to thrive so Google Assistant wouldn’t be so vital within the first place.) presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has introduced plans to separate up tech giants, though her Democratic rivals largely haven’t gone that far, and a few Republican lawmakers have additionally speculated about breaking apart Fb and Google.

The much less drastic resolution is making programs extra interoperable, so corporations like Sonos may use merchandise like Google Assistant with out approval — whether or not due to a brand new regulation or carried out by way of reverse-engineering and different unauthorized strategies. Providers like Google Assistant at the moment accumulate loads of person knowledge, and the extra they’re opened as much as different corporations, the larger the potential threat of a breach. However they can be designed in a different way or regulated in ways in which promote safety.

For now, Sonos isn’t making an unfair competitors case in opposition to Google. However CEO Patrick Spence is set to testify earlier than a congressional antitrust subcommittee on January 17th — and regardless of the end result of its infringement lawsuits, the corporate is going through a lot larger issues than violated patents.
